Arrow Damon talks Bourne 4 (How soon will we see it?)

Update Aug 3

Bourne 4 May Be Coming Later Before Sooner

Quote:
The last we heard about a fourth installment in the successful Bourne series, star Matt Damon, director, Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum), and producer Frank Marshall were in the stages of trying to get the story right and wanting the script to be as good as the first three before they move forward.

An aimed release date of summer 2011 was reported at one point, a script was supposed to surface this summer and there was even mention of a hoped production start date of next summer. However, info has just surfaced that may mean that Bourne 4 is still a while away.

Matt Damon recently spoke in a group interview about his new History Channel special called The People Speak where he gave an update on the status of the fourth Bourne movie. He doesn’t say that the movie is not happening anymore, but doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that it will be anytime soon:

Quote:
“None us have kind of seen [a script] yet, and Paul’s still cutting a movie that we worked on [Green Zone], so we’ll get together and talk about it… I just saw [producer] Frank Marshall, and we were talking about it… Then I’ve talked to Paul Greengrass quite a bit about that.”
George Nolfi was the one who was supposed to have written Bourne 4, but apparently his script - due this month - has yet to surface. What’s interesting is Damon is starring in Nolfi’s The Adjustment Bureau which is based on a Philip K. Dick short story and co-stars Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada).

Could it be that Bourne 4 is being given the time to develop properly with The Adjustment Bureau being pushed to be released first? Bureau currently has a production start date of September this year with an estimated release date of sometime in 2010.

No matter when Bourne 4 gets going, you can rest assured its main star won’t do it unless it’s quality stuff - “Oh yeah, we won’t do it unless it’s good… Promise.”

Good to hear, Matt.

I’d like to think that any delays on Bourne 4 have to do with the fact they want to get the movie right, instead of there being some sort of behind-the-scenes trouble (there’s no real indication of the latter, but it’s always a worry). As I’ve said with regards to Batman 3, it’s better for the fourth Bourne to take a long time and be quality, than to be rushed for the sake of it and ending up being disappointing.

With Greengrass currently editing Green Zone (which is due out next March), and Damon starring in The Adjustment Bureau for Universal (which is aimed for a release sometime next year), Bourne 4 may not be coming as soon as some might be hoping. I wouldn’t even be surprised if we didn’t see the movie start shooting until 2011. For now, a summer 2011 release date is still being hoped for - only time will tell if that ends up being the case.

-------------------------------------
Matt Damon has confirmed to Parade magazine that he and "Bourne Ultimatum" director Paul Greengrass will return for a fourth Bourne installment. But the project is still in its early stages and will likely not go in front of the cameras for a while.

"We're working on it. This time it would be from an original script rather than a book by Robert Ludlum," he said. "But the director Paul Greengrass is busy and I am too, so we'll see what happens."

At this point, Damon and director Clint Eastwood are shooting "The Human Factor" in South Africa. Damon has also recently wrapped production on "The Informant" and a re-teaming with Greengrass on "Green Zone." And "The Adjustment Bureau" is finishing up the pre-production phase.

So that's four movies that Damon has scheduled before the fourth Bourne film. And even though Universal Pictures has already announced the project, Damon wanted everyone to know that it's becoming increasingly difficult for him take on physically demanding roles.

"Listen, when I did the first movie, I was 29 years old. I am 37 now," he said. "After a tough fighting scene, the next day you wake up and feel your body more. That's just the way it is."

I think we will see filming within the next year or two just based on Damon's statements about the physical role. I loved the first three hopefully a forth doesnt feel out of place and that they can come up with a good story.

I hope they come up with a good story too. The first 3 are off the charts good. And Damon does all those fighting scenes without a double. Gotta take a toll on him. I was watching some of the special features today on the Supremecy DVD. That scene where he jumped off the bridge onto the barge he actually did himself. At least he made the jump with one of those wires. Don't know if he actually landed on the barge. Imagine doing that stuff at his age even though he's not old.

That director is insane. Those behind the scenes clips had a lot of good stuff. He wants everything to look and feel authentic so they don't use computer generated effects. As long as that writer can come up with a good story, the director will definitely make it look good.

Does this mean that the box sets will be obsolete?

Bourne movies are pretty solid so I'm glad they are not rushing it; I can wait. Though, the plots seemed ultra-simlple to me; I'm suprised it would take long to write another.

They need to stop turning trilogies into 4+ films. Where did they learn the definition of a trilogy from, Douglas Adams?

I guess I'm old fashioned to the sense that there were three Bourne books (by Ludlum, there have been others but not as good) so they should have made three movies. I do know that money impacts whether another movie is made or not.

I won't cry if there isn't a 4 Bourne as I felt the trilogy PERFECT, however if they do a 4th, i'm feel more comfortable with it being a prequel.

Really like your comment and I feel the same way. Glad to hear that everyone is on board about not rushing it and making sure it's the best it can be. I loved the way the trilogy wrapped up for me. So I would also be quite content with a prequel but definitely would like to see if the can come up with a good continuation.

Still no script:

Quote:
Back in April, producer Frank Marshall said that a fourth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise would hit theaters during the Summer of 2011 and that writer George Nolfi would have a draft ready by June (of 2009).

Now, Matt Damon has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that there is no script and no story, and the only thing keeping this project together is "hope."

"We're hoping to make a fourth, but we don't have a story and we don't have a script," he said. "I assume it can happen, but we have to come up with a storyline that's deserving. I mean, if you see the Bourne character come out again and say, 'I can't remember,' you're going to get up and leave the theater."

Hey,

You better not be the culprit behind Bourne's Dilemma:

HE IS AFTER YOU, AND A NEW WRITER ON BOARD.

Quote:
A fourth film in the Jason Bourne series is still in active development, despite recent speculation otherwise. Last week Matt Damon told Entertainment Weekly that they don’t yet “have a story and we don’t have a script.” Universal has apparently moved on and hired another screenwriter Josh Zetumer to write what is being described as “a parallel script.”

But what happened to screenwriter George Nolfi, who was brought on to the project in October 2008? Did he not produce anything? Back in April, producer Frank Marshall said that Universal is hoping to have a fourth Bourne movie in theaters for Summer 2011, and that they would have a draft by June.

Nolfi was forced to depart from the project to ready The Adjustment Bureau, which goes into production next month. Universal hopes that Nolfi will return to Bourne 4 after Bureau wraps production, although it isn’t clear if the studio will go with one of the two stories or combine drafts.

As THR points out, while the practice is somewhat rare, studios have commissioned multiple parallel drafts for past films, usually tentpoles. Examples include Star Trek: Generations, Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer and Wolverine. Some people believe that one of the many reasons Wolverine was such a mess is that they were shooting pages from two completely different drafts of the project.

Josh Zetumer broke onto the scene in 2006 with a spec called Villain, which places in the top of the 2006 Black List (a list compiled by industry insiders of the top unproduced screenplays of the year). John Stockwell had become attached to direct. Zetumer also penned a remake of Dune for Peter Berg and The Infiltrator, a Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle based on a Atlantic Monthly article about British intelligence agency spies planted in the Irish Republican Army to monitor terrorist activities.

As for the story… Marshall has previously stated that he would like to see Bourne go to South America in his next adventure, which will be the first movie not based on a Robert Ludlum novel.

Default Bourne 4 Gets A New Writer

Quote:
The fourth installment in the successful Bourne franchise has been in the works for a good while now, always edging ever-closer to actually happening, with every announcement that “the story is being worked on” and that they’re trying to “get it right.” We reported a few weeks ago that the next Bourne movie may be coming later rather than sooner, and last week star Matt Damon told Entertainment Weekly, “[We] have a story and we don’t have script.”

That doesn’t sound too promising…

However, it seems that things have picked up a bit on the Bourne 4 front as Universal has signed writer Josh Zetumer to pen what is being described as a, “parallel script.”

Zetumer hasn’t written any completed film so far, but has written the scripts for Villain (currently in production), Peter Berg’s Dune remake and The Infiltrator, a Warner Bros. project which has Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star.

George Nolfi was originally tapped to write Bourne 4, and was supposed to have produced a draft a couple of months ago. However Nolfi is currently writing and directing The Adjustment Bureau (also starring Damon, FYI), which starts production next month, so he had to step away from Bourne 4. It is hoped that once Nolfi’s finished with Bureau, he will make a return to Bourne, but still unclear whether Zetumer and Nolfi’s scripts will be integrated if Nolfi returns, or whether Universal just wants two different scripts to hold side-by-side in order to choose which direction they want to go in (it could be either one, really).

THR notes that although it’s rare, it’s not unheard of that two scripts will be written parallel to one another. It particularly happens with tentpole movies (I think Bourne could just about fit into that category), with notable examples being Wolverine, Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer, Star Trek: Generations and the upcoming Conan remake.

I think it’s good that Universal isn’t waiting around for Nolfi while he does another project before they get started with Bourne 4. But they also seem to want to take their time with the sequel, a excuse reason for the delay(s) which they’ve given on a number of occasions. The new writer they’ve brought on board can’t really be judged at this point in time, since none of what he’s written/is attached to write has actually been made yet. However, it’s certainly impressive for a newcomer to be attached to four sizeable projects.

I’m just wondering why they didn’t get Tony Gilroy - writer of the first three Bourne movies - to come back for this one. It seemed to work out pretty well for all involved…including the audience.

What do you think of the them getting a new writer for the next Bourne movie?

Bourne 4 is (clearly) still in the development stages, but has a hoped release of sometime in the summer of 2011.
