Talking Valkyrie - 5/19/09

I just read on "The Digital Bits" that Valkyrie is coming out on 5/19. It will include (on the special edition only) several very interesting sounding featurettes.

Now I know a lot of people said Tom Cruise's performance was horrible, and, to be honest, I have not seen the film.

But the idea of a film about the assassination of Hitler REALLY sounds interesting...and it will be a day one purchase for me!!

Will I be satisfied or could it be a let down?

Please also see this thread.

This movie was a letdown. The suspense seemed 'forced', even though you already knew how it was going to end. However, it is a good example of the superior acting skills the foreign actors hold over Tom Cruise. He was good in the first few opening lines when he was speaking in German, but then you're like.....oh.....it's Cruise playing himself again. Singer's big mistake was not having German accents for the main characters. It would've brought more validity if they did.

Why would German accents make a difference? Would it not be more realistic to have German actors speaking in German? Why would a WW2 German officer be speaking English, with a German accent, anyways? Should be done like The Longest Day.

Default "Valkyrie" Video Quality

I just bought Valkyrie Blu-Ray with Tom Cruise and I have alot of grainy noise in some scenes. This is the first time I've seen this grainy noise in a blu ray movie however, I have definitely seen it in the documentary "Planet Earth by the BBC". I was wondering if anyone else had this problem with Valkyrie. Thanks

Are you suggesting that all the grain should've been removed? You are comparing this with Planet Earth, which had great PQ.

Welcome to the site! I see that this is your first post.

Oh heck ya! I'm pretty sure of it. It doesn't add any quality to it. It's just annoying, in fact I had to rewind to get what I missed in the movie because I was so distracted by it.

I read in another forum that some people had the same problem with Planet Earth. They said it was just a bad video processing error by the creators of the Blu Ray that appears on bad copies.

I'm sorry to say that at least I'm not the only one with this problem. I guess I'll return Valkyrie ASAP. Pretty funny, Valkyrie was my first blu ray movie too. The only other blu ray I own is Baraka which has NO problems and is absolutely beautiful!

Many factors come into play as to why some films look better than others on Blu-ray. The original source material (the film) as well as the effort put forth in transferring the information to Blu-ray is very important, as is the lighting and direction when the material was shot.

Grain is a widely debated topic. Grain is inherit to film since film is created through a chemical process using silver halide. Wikipedia has a more "technical" description of what it is...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_grain

In some cases Grain is added by the director in order to achieve a desired effect. A perfect example of this is in the movie "300" where heavy amounts of grain were added to the film. Only films shot digitally will be totally devoid of grain.

Where the debate comes in, is the amount of grain that is perceived as "good" or "bad". Many films are "scrubbed" and grain is removed to give the film a "cleaner" or "crisper" look. By removing grain entirely detail is lost.... so grain is often simply "reduced" When you see Grain that you didn't see on the DVD, it's not because the grain wasn't there, it's due to the fact that the increased resolution is showing more detail, which includes the subtle and intricate presence of grain, that standard definition resolution didn't show. There is certainly a great difference between film grain, and simply blurry lines and lack of detail from standard definition
.

I haven't seen Valkyrie on Blu-Ray yet, but I noticed the strange glitchiness (for a few seconds) on a certain part of Planet Earth. Is it grain or is it just some sort of "Glitchy McGlitchtickle?"
