Default Valkyrie!

I personally dont like Singer since he ruined Superman Returns, and I didnt like Tom Cruise one he made this whole Scientology thing well known and angered long time fans. But i have to admit i loved this movie, it was just a very good movie.

I recommend this to anyone who likes good movies and loves history

does the fact that he does not have a german accent take away fromt he movie itself? to me i think it would have a huge impact on the film overall! I mean how hard would it have been for him to throw on a german accent if he is half the actor he portrays himself to be? still looks like a good film, i will probably rent it

Well if u see, no one in the film has a german accent, because a lot of the actors are American and British (some german too). Hitler has a semi german accent. If he had a german accent, the critics would eat him alive if he didnt get it down just right.

I enjoyed it, the plot was cool and its amazing that it happened like that

I am a big fan of WWII movies, and the reaction to this film (that I have noted) has been positive. I hope it is a long movie, but I doubt that.

It's history light. The inescapable fact is that Germans overwhelmingly supported Hitler and there was remarkably little dissention in the SS.

I kind of thought the same thing myself. I may rent it but just don't think it'd be believable with no German accents. Not to mention that Tom Cruise really isn't as good as he thinks he is. He is just ok and has had a lot of luck along the way.

I wasn't bothered that Russell Crowe didn't have a Spanish accent, or a Latin accent in Gladiator, or that Liam Neeson didn't have a German accent in Schindler's List, or that Anthony Hopkins didn't have a hispanic accent in The Mask of Zorro, or Sean Connery didn't have a Russian accent in The Hunt For Red October. If the story is compelling enough, and the movie well made, then I can live without Tom Cruise having an accent.

An accent alone wouldn't take anything away anymore than the fact that they're speaking English in the first place.

Is it just me but wouldn't it be rather silly for any of these characters to be speaking with a German accent? Think about it or a second. I can't be the only one who feels this way.

Well, no it wouldn't be silly since they are playing Germans, actually members of Hitlers SS army.

That's the point! They are playing Germans. The only way to make it truly authentic would be to have them actually speaking German. Having them speak with a German accent would be silly because in reality they are suppose to be speaking German and not English.

I brought this up in another Valkyrie thread, but a prime example is Memoirs of a Geisha where the actors were instructed to speak with a forced Asian accent???? Not only is that borderline racist but it's rather silly because they are suppose to be speaking Japanese, not English.

I don't need fake accents to understand or assist me in believing these characters in Valkyrie are German.

I'll cosign DealsR4theDevil's post in reference to Tom Cruise. I think he catches a lot of flack more for his religious beliefs then his acting abilities.

No, your not the only one.

I think the point is that if they are speaking english with a german accent - they are still speaking english, not german; so having a german accent does nothing to further authenticate the experience. If cameras had caught the events as they happened, in actuallity they would all be speaking german, not english with german accents. I would prefer german with english subs.

The whole problem with accents is that they have to be spot on, or you risk pulling the audience right out of the movie; just ask Kevin Costner.

They were not in the SS, they were regular army. Thats why they had control over the reserves and could place the blame of a coup d'etat on the ss and the gestapo.

Having them speak in german accents would have been weak. We were listening top them speak as if we the audience understood german, unless you think other germans think that other germans sound like Colonel Klink.

Alot of times you can't have people do accents they can't do. Hate when actors do a southern accents. They do more of the Gone With The Wind talk.

They did the samething as they did in The Hunt For Red October. They began Valkyrie speaking in German then convert into English. In The Hunt for Red October they did that with Russian. When they are speaking English in both movies, you are spose to believe they are still talking in German.

I to this day do not understand what everyones problem is. He is either a good actor or he isnt. What do his religious beliefs have to do with it. Ya I know scientology seems crazy to people, but guess what, all religions seem crazy to me yet I dont discriminate against the people who believe in them.

So what if an actor has a religion you dont like or a gambling problem or any other eccentric tendency. What does that have to do with his acting talents? How does that make a movie better or worse?

I mean ya if the actor was using his money to cause cancer or something then you could make a conscious choice not to support him but this Tom Cruise thing is just ridiculous.

For ultimate authenticity I would prefer to have German spoken with English subtitles like in The Lives of Others.

Of course the English can be overlooked but I am sick of movies being dumbed down for us. If this movie was made in any other country they would have kept the authentic German language. But the studios just love to underestimate middle america. You guys remember how Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was changed to Sorcerer's Stone for the U.S. versions?

Americans are a lot smarter than the studios give us credit for. Just look at The Passion of the Christ, all subtitled and the theaters were selling out of seats.

Yeah, Collateral would be awesome on Blu-ray.

Back to Valkyrie, I plan to see it this weekend, probably on Sat or Sun. I can't wait.

Movies like this really annoy me. If it was up to me everybody should be speaking German. Let alone having German accents.
