Default Good Blu Ray movies vs. poor blu ray movies

I am trying to educate myself on how to tell by looking at the specs of a blu ray movie if it will be have stunning PQ or not. Does it have to do with the amount of space it occupies on the disc? What is this bitrate I keep reading about?

I usually choose movies based on content alone but don't want to buy one of noticeable lesser quality. For example, I know the Fifth Element is being remastered. Would one have been able to discern if the first one was not a good transfer based on the listed specs?

If someone could explain this to me (in simple layman terms) or direct me to a thread/link that explains it, I would certainly appreciate it.

You don't. The only way to tell is to read reviews really. Find a reviewer whose opinion you usually agree with and stick to that. Things like bitrate and space is only a part of what goes into the end results and you can't just judge by those alone - master quality plays a large role and that's not something you can easily quantify.

Thanks for the response. I have read over the reviewer's thread in this forum and looked at some the ones suggested there. I'm just not sure which is the better one. One of the ones I was looking at I disagree with just about each review as it pertains to movie content, meaning almost every movie he hated, happens to be some of my favorites! (I think it is highdigest)

That's why I thought I'd try to learn more about the more technical aspects of the format I am buying. I honestly do not know what I am reading when I look at specs such as bit rate, etc., and wonder how it relates to the whole picture.

I guess I'll have to try to research this more on my own. Thank you for taking the time to respond

Go here. This is the guide I use. I listen to fans, over reviewers.

Just read Chad Varnadore's reviews over at Hometheaterspot.com. He's the most spot on reviewer I've witnessed. He posts here too. Highdefdigest is biased, on crack or something of that nature, and the Tier thread over at AVS has it's issues as well. I've never disagreed with a review from Chad, and I've been reading them since August.
