Default Do blu-ray movies look good?

Do blu-ray movies look great (but without the extra special HD effect that comes with all HD televisions) on a standard non-HD television, the same, or distorted and bad?

a Blu-ray movie on a SD tv looks like a DVD (or atleast it did when I tried it with my PS3.

lawl I was about to write F YEA when I read the title, but then it said on a SD TV. Theyd look just like DVDs I suppose. Maybe they would look like upconverted DVD? Since they are mastered in 1080p instead of 480p like DVDs. Not sure though.

I am not quite sure how good they would look but because the master is at 1080p, I would assume that the player will output it at the highest setting your TV will allow. i think most standard tvs 480p or somethin like that... This would imply that they would look like standard dvd I would assume.

I would think it would have PQ equal to the best DVDs available. It wouldnt look any better than the best dvds since your tv cant handle anything higher than 480i/480p.

Id start saving up for an HDTV if I was in your position.

urg. i'm already saving for my ps3. I will probablly get and HDTV within a year or so, but for now i'm getting a ps3 for christmas. I asked this question because of the 5 free blu-ray movie offer with the ps3, I didn't want crappy looking movies on my tv, but now it is solved. Thanks people!
Does anyone know if HDTV prices will go down anytime soon?

I recall a thread where a blu-ray player was on display with a regular yellow cable running from it. The worker (idiot) claimed he didn't see the big deal because the picture isn't that much better.

However, because the movies are usually treated to remastering and are always widescreen, you can get quality not available on DVD. Prime example is "A Christmas Story". When I compared the DVD to BD it was night and day. The DVD was muddy and ugly, and just looked like a video tape had been sitting on a shelf degrading for so many years and finally transferred to DVD. Shameful for this now holiday classic.

So, in my opinion - stop buying DVD, and buy blu-ray. The images will be better color-wise, and better overall sharpness if you use S-video or component cable. Then you won't have to rebuy those movies when you get an HDTV. The friend of another member did exactly that.

Wait for the Super bowl, that is the biggest time of year when people get new tv's, lots of good sales. I don't know when that is, soooo.

What price are you looking to spend?

You won't be disappointed my friend. The PS3 is one of the best (currently) Blu-Ray players out there and certainly the most affordable. Make sure you get the latest firmware download for it. Enjoy!!

And yes, HDTV prices are dropping rapidly. Christmas will be a great time to buy.

This got me thinking, why aren't any stand alone blu-ray players made to similar specs as the PS3? I mean, I'd like to see my movies load up superfast too. There is just so much new firmware will do. Unless they have yet to tap the potential.

I know, why not just buy a PS3. I want the deck player for the asthetic timeless appeal, and ease of use.

Honestly, I have found the colour much improved on when viewing BD on an SD TV. They really seem to pop compared to DVD. Otherwise, the clarity (a.k.a. resolution) detail is the same as DVD.

Indeed it is. A big gain is that the backgrounds aren't filtered into blurry messes

The best and simplest way to put it is that the PS3 is completely overpowered for the job. The PS3 is sold at a loss using the standard game system methodology of making it up on royalties. BD players on the other hand have to have that profit margin there.

I'm sure you'll see some high-end models equal it soon enough.

I play Blu-Rays on my SD tv and it looks a hell of a lot better in my opinion, oh and I have a 27" Sony trinitron.
