Default Ya'know, all this raging argument is for naught

Face it—the marketplace has spoken regarding sound recordings. And they want the convenience of iTunes over the fidelity of even a normal CD.

And this is also true on NetFlix—the download portion is becoming a separate membership entity, even though the sound is stereo only, and there are no extras like commentaries, etc.

You're fighting a lost battle.

I don't quite understand what you want to tell us. Please elaborate.

I agree that the mass market audience prefers convenience to sound quality, there still is a sizable market that demands the highest quality on a physical medium. Companies should still produce audiophile releases as many people now have large investments in their home theaters with surround speakers.

Most likely the digital distribution vs physical medium feud.

Convenience vs quality.

I use both depending on what I want out of it.

well i am not sure if this was just supposed to end at the original statement lol BUT.....

when the music companies were fighting downloads etc..... and had that public spotlight they may have been BETTER off not showing how illegal downloads hurt metallicas bottom line and INSTEAD maybe educating the public that a mp3 is not as good as a cd or sacd or..... anything really lol

I think more people would prefer the quality if they actually knew, and my experience is most people don't, i would say in the past month i have had at least 6 comments on my cd collection regarding me having store bought cd's instead of lamewire downloads or an i-pod full of mp3's, and upon explaining i get that stupified look and the "you mean this isn't even cd quality" comment back

I also just had one friend who is now fully aware of lossless audio on blu's, the tragedy of the public going to mp3 over sacd/dvdaudio and everything else i moan about etc... lol, and he just said something yesterday about cd's and 5.1 to which i had to fill him in on the terms "source" and "pro-logic".

have to educate the public before they can speak

Yet the Nielsen numbers for 2008 still show CD as the dominant format.

Default What I meant was…

CD sales are down 30% from last year. The very mediocre iTunes and comparable outlets have increased sales this year, as in the past several years.

iTunes MP3s sound awful played through a decent system. Obviously, blatantly awful. There is no comparison between iTunes and everyday CDs. Yet the market clearly prefers the quick satisfaction of iTunes.

So where does that leave an esoteric format like SACD? A few titles will appear for a little while, and then it will fade away. Will it be replaced by some BluRay audio format? I doubt it. (Imagine people hauling their purchase back to their retailers and demanding where's the *image* on this BluRay??) I'm afraid you'll just have to get used to BluRay discs with dynamite audio…and pictures too.

This is a niche, plain and simple, like lots of things in the marketplace. One can choose to adapt or not regardless of the majority.

Good point. I also think they should have left the i-pod .....just a mobile means to hear your music. This would have left the public with 2 choices.......i-pod for mobility, and cd's to use in the home or car. They should have never started making docking devices for the i-pod. Holy cow......everywhere you look I-pod docks on EVERYTHING. workout equipment, strollers for kids ,bikes,.......you name it , it has a i-pod dock. This is what is killing Cd's period.
