I currently do not own and hdtv but I still buy blu-rays every chance I get, so that when I do upgrade I will be prepared, I live with someone who has a Sharp 1080p 46" LCD HDTV, that plays the blu's at 1080p, 24hz, at least that what it says, Well the argument is, this kids friend was telling me that blu-ray is for people who dont know what they are talking about, he says it doesnt look any different froma remastered dvd, or upconverted dvd's, he says a DVD and Blu-ray have the same "visual" movie on them just the blu holds more data, He says that the way movies are shot 35mm, or I think he said 75mm film is the reason for the DVD and the BLU looking the same, Im sorry if this doesnt make sense, but I need some EXPERT input i know a good amount but not the technical aspects of everything, any help would be grealty appreciated, thanks

Your buddies' friend doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Film has more headroom than anything currently, and Blu-ray currently makes the most that is capable in the home media environment. |

What would be the best movie to play for him on blu-ray to show him the difference, I own, HULK, TDK, CARS, Bucket List, Step Borthers, Nightmare before Christmas, Horton Hears a who, Tropic Thunder, any of those show a big enough difference to undeniably admit that BLU is KING!?

Any of the animated movies you listed would be great to show him since they typically look better anyway and you can really see the difference. As for a live action movie go with the Hulk or The Dark Knight.
And one other thing, make sure you explain to him that it's not just the picture that is in HD but the audio as well and the sound will blow him away on even a mediocre surround system. Last edited by andyman1970; 01-03-2009 at 03:28 AM. |

Although the above post doesn't necessarily mean anything, since it could have been doctored, anyone who owns a BD and DVD copy of a quality movie and a display big enough to make a difference should attest to the superior video quality BD.
Then consider how many movies a shot in high defnition video to begin with these days. It would take a moron to assume that downconverting a 1080p/24 source to 480i/60 would be just as good. There are some incredibly beautiful movies recorded digitally in HD. Youth Without Youth, The Other Boleyn Girl, for example. Movies like this where the visuals are more important than the action or the audio are likely to have a strong impact. Getting back to the 24p issue, show your friend some slow pans from a 24p BD movie and compare the same scene to a DVD. He'll never be able to watch judder without losing his lunch again. |

You have to take something else into consideration, Some people simply can't see that well.
Quick story: A friend of mine had brought over a female friend of his. I wanted to show my friend a clip of Transformer's from my PS3 and to show him how clear HDTV is. The movie was just showing at the theaters around this time. The girl stated and swore that she had a copy of the movie and it was just as clear as the clip I downloaded from the PS3 server. She had a bootleg copy that someone copied with a camera in the theater. At that point I didn't want to call her stupid, but I figured she was just simply BLIND ! ! ! I think you should just tell your friend that there is a difference, and you feel sorry for him that he can't experince quailty because of his bad vision! |

There is a world of difference -
Blu R will have higher quality pic wise and sound wise. HD-DVD will look and sound but hey thats gone by the wayside. So if your so convinced that BluR makes no difference stay with what your happy with ! Jude |
