Default Help settle a debate!

My friend has just bought a PS3, now he only has an SDTV and a Monitor with only a VGA connection.

He went and found this cable.

Cable

and he reckons it will be able to display 720/1080p on his monitor.

I've said it won't but he won't listen to me, as someone else in the comments have said that it does do 720p

So, will it display a HD image on his VGA monitor or not?

his max res is 1280x1024, so its a 4:3 monitor

but isn't that cable using composite RGB?

Well, his monitor needs to support 1080p in order for it to display that resolution. I've never tried that process before cause I don't like watching movies on my computer. Don't bother to argue with him any longer and let him try it.

well I realised that it would not show 1080p on his monitor as that's a 16:9 resolution, regardless of the cable, but i just find the claims that a composite VGA cable, can display 1080p, as the ebay listing of the same item states, to be a load of bullshit, but am I wrong, is there a way to transmit 1080p over a composite cable?

Bear in mind also that if your friends wants Blu-Ray playback that his monitor will have to support HDCP, which means a digital connection like DVI or HDMI, otherwise the image will be scaled on the monitor. That's my understanding anyways.

If you look in the comments of the link you posted, a few people are mentioning the resolution of 480p 60 hz.

So, is the product info saying that if you connect it to a Wii, one will be for composite and 2 for audio but if you use it on a PS3, all 3 are used for a component connection (and I guess you use optical for audio)?

Anyway, I've only used up to 1080i over component on the PS3 due to TV/monitor restrictions. I thought I had read that for 1080p, HDMI/DVI (digital) was needed. Blu-rays at 1080i over component works fine though. I just tried I, Robot and it looks good but I have no idea how to tell if it is being scaled or not.
