Do those 7 free discs all count as discs sold? If so, that explains why their disc sales figures have been holding up as well as they have.

The 5 mail in do not, the 2 with the matrix and matrix itself do. When best buy had buy a A2 + 9 free (4 in store, 5 mail order), those 4 free counted.

I honestly now think that most of those people purchasing players are EXISTING hd-dvd owners buying 2nd/3rd players to try and support the format and get the 5 free discs out of it. Its a sad state of affairs.

I wouldn't get too excited - the HD-A2 stock at the local Best Buy disappeared quickly once the $299.99 price point hit, whereas both Sammy's and the Sony are still on the shelf not getting much love at $799.99.

Milo, the average Best Buy shopper is the type of person who isn't going to be moving to a 1080p display until their 1080i displays die, if they even have much of a concept of what 1080i and 1080p is.

I predict this war shall continue for a while.....

they don't make money on the players....not when they drop it down to 299 so fast....

they make money on the movies...and the people who would pay so little for a player will likely get scared away from actually buying a movie once they get 5 free movies....

I mean...if you buy a HD player for 300 bucks and you get 5 free movies....why spend more when you're already looking for the "cheaper alternative" ?...

high-def formats are still on the pricey side.....even at 300 bucks...

150 is about the price that J6P will jump on.......and until then, the PS3 is going to be the "popular" choice for a BD player as you're killing 3 and 4 birds with one stone...especially if this person has kids...
