I honestly now think that most of those people purchasing players are EXISTING hd-dvd owners buying 2nd/3rd players to try and support the format and get the 5 free discs out of it. Its a sad state of affairs. |

I've got some tiles that need laying in the backyard. I've put the job off for weeks and I just don't want to do it, but the wife keeps nagging me. IF the HD-DVD group comes over and does it for me, I'll probably take a player off their hands.

From my standpoint on this, it would appear that Amazon is taking a very large risk with this. If it was just one free title, or even two, I would see it as a strong marketing campaign, designed to promote HD-DVD.
However, I am concerned with the fact that Circuit City was giving away 5 free titles with a player, and now from Amazon, seven?! It's too risky a maneuver to attempt. One could say yes, they are desperate to market it, but with taking such unrealistic gambles isn't good for Toshiba, and more importantly, the shareholders. When it comes to the cost of the Blu-Ray players, I am very glad to hear that the cost of the lasers have come down a significant portion. Marketing, in regards to the HD format optical discs is much faster thanks to the Internet in this decade. It makes me wonder what will happen in 15 years or so. I only hope by then, there won't be such bitter attitudes on behalf of the studio companies. |

When the HD DVD players are free, everyone should pick one up and never buy a movie for it...this will drive the "attachment rate" into the toilet for HD DVD.
Wouldn't that be funny as "attachment rate" is their constant go to point...lol |

Is Toshiba really that desparate? Or, like the guy from the Digital Bits suggested, is Microsoft quietly funneling them money so that Toshiba won't really lose their shirts? This is like rats jumping from a sinking ship. Or Toshiba knows that it's only a matter of time before HD-DVD is dead.
