loud ps3 - Blu-ray Forum

I heard only the initial launch ps3 has the loud fan. Which is what I have. Do the 40g and the 80g have loud fans?? My 60g gets so loud sometimes I gotta turn my audio up

I have a 40 GB that I got last year, I've never heard the fan. Guess I got lucky.

Try vacuuming out the fan exhaust ports and vents. Typically, dust build up will cause added heat, which will turn the fans up higher and sooner than normal.

My 40 was quiet as a mouse, too, when it died twice and had to go in for warranty repair. What I got back was a much louder unit (my old unit with a new fan, I guess). Thing is, it hasn't died since.

My PS3 is quiet also. I think the PS3 (the 40g, 80g and 160g) that uses the newer 65mm chip is the quieter one.

I was looking to get a new 40gb but do they even sell them new?? Best buys website only has 80gb and 160gb

My PS3 was noisy until I put a small towel underneath the unit. My PS3 is on a glass TV stand and since then, it has been a lot quieter.

The vibration from the unit on the glass made it noisy....

I've had my 40 Gig PS3 for about a year now and I love it....

You put an entire towel underneath it? It might be better if you put little rubber mats on the four corners instead. The heatsink is the bottommost part of the PS3.

I have the 40 GB and it is always quiet. However, there was one time I left the glass door closed on my media center when I was watching a movie. About 90 minutes into the movie I heard the fan(s) on my PS3 get really loud. I presume it wasn't getting enough airflow at the time. I opened the door and it was very hot in the media center. I decided to power down the PS3 and let it cool off for a bit. I haven't had any trouble since and I haven't forgotten to leave the door open since.

Should probably take your PS3 out of your media center since it's recommended to give it 4 clear feet on all sides of it to keep it running smoothly.
