Default PS3...hot and loud or is it just me?

I have trying a PS3 for the last few days as a stand alone Blu-Ray disk player, but find after about an hour into the movies, the system ramps-up the cooling fan to what I feel is quite loud. Air coming from the exhaust is also quite warm. I guess my question would be is this normal. The reason I ask is that I like a quiet room to view movies and I found that I was distracted by the noise the PS3 made and also had some concerns about how hot the PS3 got.

does your PS3 sit in an inclosed area?

The only way I can tell my ps3 is on is because of the green light or if there's a picture on the screen and/or sound coming from the speakers. For you to hear it over the game/movie audio is pretty bad.

Mine is the exact same way. My wife hates it. Mine is in on top of a coffee table in open air.

Mine is standing vertically. Maybe that would help, Seems it would have better circulation that way. It's quiet and emits warm heat but it's not hot to the touch. Its been on since purchase.

The player is in a semi-enclosed cabinet with the exhaust of the player pointed to the open area of the cabinet. I have the two tower with bridge cabinetry with all my DVD's in one side and all my equipment on the other side. Both towers have glass doors. I really haven't tried the PS3 in the open yet...that was my next task but I did have the PS3 playing with the glass door open and still found it loud.

Ah, this is a common issue a lot of people seem to report. It shouldn't be making any loud noises though.

Your PS3 needs to be in a completely open area(like on a shelf or glass hdtv stand) with at least 6 inches apart from everything else it should be fine. It does get hot, but it honestly doesn't get any hotter than your typical lcd tv that's been left on for an hour or so.

Just keep it in open air and don't block any vents.

Mine is quiet... Very quiet. You want loud? The 360, is by far the loudest console that I have.

I don't even know what my ps3 sounds like. If it weren't for the lights, i wouldn't know it's on.

If you think the ps3 is noisy, try the 360(fan) or the dreamcast(disc accessing).

Even in quiet scenes in a BD I can only hear the PS3 fan if I really try block out the movie and listen for it. My PS3 is about 6-8 feet away from me.

Move the PS3 somewhere else, it took me three different locations till I got it right. Now it never gets loud or hot.

I found the PS3 quite loud in my cabinet with the glass dorrs closed as well, moved it to an upright position behind my plasma and all sound went away!

Finally a good reason for the bluetooth! No line of sight needed to control it.

I had my PS3 on all day saturday while playing the PS2 so the PS3 could get some folding done. Even with the CPU doing the max folding proteins I could hear the fan a little just to remind me it's still on.

There is probably a little bit of variance between units depending on circumstances but I think the biggest problem is just that it's all so subjective.

The PS3 is the first game system I've ever owned. As far as heat and noise the only other equipment I personally have experience with and can compare to is my Sony DVDR which heats up and has a fan. The PS3 is louder and hotter than that. Is it as loud and hot as your PS3? Who knows. I read these threads and try to get a handle on it but it's difficult.

If your PS3 is running loudly it almost certainly means its overheating or some other variable is forcing it to work much harder than it should be.

Under normal operation it's very quiet but it does let off a little bit of heat.

Question, after watching a movie the other night I left the PS3 on, not doing anything just sitting there on the xmb, and after an hour the fan was still running. Does that sound normal?
