Set in 117 AD, the film tells the story of a group of Roman
soldiers who must fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack. The film just wrapped production.

Marshall dealt with military mayhem in Dog Soldiers, women forced to violence in The Descent and Scotland-set carnage in Doomsday and is combining all three in his fourth feature, a relentless action-adventure set in AD 117 (63 years before the events of Gladiator).

“Etain is kind of revenge incarnate,” says the writer/director, speaking to Empire exclusively on set. “Her family were butchered by the Romans, she had her tongue cut out by the Romans, she’s had a hell of a time and she’s out for Roman blood.”

“She’s quite furious,” agrees Kurylenko. “Because one sense is not there – she can’t speak – all the others are more developed. She sees very well and hears very well: she is an animal!”

Kurylenko stars alongside Hunger’s Michael Fassbender, who plays the title character, stranded behind enemy lines, and a superb roster of established and up’n’coming talent, including Dominic West, Noel Clarke, David Morrisey, JJ Feild and Riz Ahmed (soon to be seen in the rather excellent Brit-grit thriller Shifty, out April 24).

Centurion is being produced by Slumdog Millionaire Oscar-snaffler Christian Colson and Robert Jones (Run Fatboy Run) and Empire has visited its sets in both Scotland and Surrey and witnessed the action and intensity up close, so expect regular updates online and in the magazine, in the build up to its release (likely to be later this year).

I enjoy all his movies so far. Doomsday was not the best, but it was still entertaining. Looking forward to this release.

Neil Marshall’s Centurion has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures. The film will be distributed through Magnolia’s genre division, Magnet. Centurion will star Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds), Dominic West (The Wire, 300) and Olga Kurylenko (Hitman, Quantam of Solace).

Neil Marshall has quietly been building himself an impressive action resume. While Doomsday was no earth shattering hit, both it and the Decent sported grimy cinematography and slick action sequences. Marshall knows how to craft a tense film, and his gritty style should mesh well with the given setting and plot. Whatever happened to Outpost? Now that sounded like a fun movie. Zombies swarming an oil rig? Get that one in the pipeline (pun intended) stat Neil! Hit the jump for the synopsis of Centurion.

Boasting savagely violent battle scenes and an adrenaline fueled chase through the breathtaking Scottish highlands, CENTURION is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain. Michael Fassbender stars as Quintus Dias, Roman centurion and son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue a captured general (Dominic West). The son of the Pict leader is murdered during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict’s most vicious and skilled warriors, led by a beautiful and deadly tracker (Olga Kurylenko), who are hell bent on revenge.

Because I’m a geek without shame or restriction, I’ll follow just about anything British director Neil Marshall releases. Cinematically speaking, of course. Even if it’s a continuous, 120-minute shot of him staring directly into the camera while wearing a sombrero, chances are I’ll buy a ticket, strap on a pair of dopey 3D glasses, and munch happily on popcorn for the duration. Yes, my life is that exciting. The latest clip from Marshall’s upcoming actioner “Centurion” appears to have been lifted from the middle of a particularly exciting moment in the film, which may explain the short adrenaline rush I just experienced. The energy drink I’m currently consuming may have contributed a little something to my undiluted excitement, but I like to think the embedded video is responsible for most of it. However, don’t take my word for it — watch the clip for yourself.

The red-band trailer for the upcoming Roman bloodbath Centurion has hit the net. Directed by Neil Marshall (Doomsday), Centurion stars Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) as a Roman corporal who must lead a small platoon of soldiers to rescue their general and get out of enemy territory.

This is playing in Toronto next week for the After Dark Festival. Was thinking of going to see it, but figured this would get a wide release so no need to go to an event to check it out.
