Just wondering if I'm crazy

Hi everyone, new member to this site so bare with me. I have a DVD collection of 700+ movies that I have been starting to sell off for $3.00 each to friends, family, coworkers etc... My question is, is it crazy to toally try and rebuild my whole collection on Blu-Ray Discs? Should I have kept all those movies? Just wondering about that, didnt know if I was doing something I would regret later on. So far, I'm up to over $600 which will all be spent in a nearby Best Buy soon. And while I'm here, whats the one movie everyone really wants to see Blu-Ray put out soon? Mine is the movie Seven with Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey. Thanks all!!! And yes, I just noticed I misspelled "crazy" in the title.

Try online retailers. Amazon, buy.com w/Google Checkout, etc. They all have better prices. I only buy at Best Buy if I don't preorder and its a must buy like POTC I and II.

This post implies that the OP should "back them up to a hard drive" then sell the originals while keeping the "backed up" files which is not different than piracy.

yes it is different...he purchased the movies...he can do whatever he wants with them and then sell the originals...

pirating is making copies of a movie and selling them as a business.....he is just making a wise move that takes alot of time....

and if he wants to take the time to actually do this...then so be it...

No. Making a copy and selling the original is stealing. Period.

It is just like buying the book, War and Peace, photocopying the entire book so you can read it over and over again, at the same time selling the original to someone else.

Just because it is digital and not physical does not make it any less wrong.

Not to get into a long drawn out debate - you can make a backup as long as you own the origional disc. Once the origional is no longer in your possesion, your backup should no longer exist either. Making a backup before selling it - is "piracy". You don't own it anymore and you do not have the "legal" right to be copying before you sell it. Example - you make a copy of a car key and sell the car. You still have the key so you "borrow" the car whenver you want. Thats theft.


Anyways to the OP - do what you want but PLEASE purchase ONLINE. You will save a LOAD OF MONEY! Don't buy at BB. They are freaking rip offs. Get yourself in a group for Amazon Prime and have a ball! Or get 25 bux or more and get free shipping.

Replace everything if you want to, but be aware that some dvds may never come to BD. Or you might be waiting a very looooong time. As with many here, I myself no longer purchase SDVDs. I only purchase BDs. I can wait and be happy building my collection as I want.

dear god 700+ movies on a hard-drive at 4.5gb a pop 3150gbs of movie lol 7 500gb hard drives lol... nah im keeping mine I have so many fin* seasons im only at 615 and im keeping them sept the ones i get on blu-ray the great movies ill re-buy or the ones I like im not rebuying some silly 3$ chuck norris top dog movie lol

The PS3 will upconvert your DVDs to 1080. Although the quality is not as crisp as Blu-ray, it does make those older movies worth watching again. As far as titles that everyone is looking forward to, check the forum. The wishlist is endless.

The sensible thing to do is to wait for announcements of the actual films on BDs first before you sell the DVDs. The even more sensible thing to do, since announced movies can be delayed, is to wait until they are in your hands before you sell them.

There are thousands of movies that have yet to see the light of day on DVD. The chances that they'll be released on BD in the next three years is slim. So cherish what you have. A DVD in hand is worth TWO BDs in the announced list.

Really it depends on what you think. I think all movies with a lot of special effects will be great on Blu-ray. I don't think you're crazy, but you will be putting alot of money into rebuilding you're whole collection.

If you're planning on buy Blu-ray movies from Best Buy. I'll recommend you buy them online, websites like Amazon, are normally $5 to $10 cheaper. Amazon is having a B2F1 deal right now. DeepDiscount is have a 20% off deal.

With Deepdiscount 20% you can buy a Blu-ray movie for $15 compare to Best Buy $25.

Of course in the end it's your choice.

i honestly dont think your crazy i had an DVD collection of 300+ movies and i started selling the ones that were announced, i still have about 20 left most of them are universal movies but other then that i would sell them and get some of your money back.

As for buying blu-rays, i would go with amazon it is alot cheaper then BB or CC. but thats just me. Good luck and welcome to the forums

i agree with everyone else here. Keep your dvds ay least for now. And yeah at amazon instead of bb you'll be saving some good amount of money. Also the movey im looking forward to is 300.

I have 300+ dvds but I'm rebuying first just adding bluray titles to the number. Since not all titles are available on blu yet(and some may never release)ya, you're crazy to be selling your collection.

I'm only buying blu-rays going forward unless it's something kind of obscure that I know will never be coming to blu-ray (I was a fan of The Kids In The Hall sketch comedy which doesn't have nearly enough demand to ever merit hi-def). I will not sell the SD DVDs until I have the new versions in hand.

I personally would hold onto the DVDs and wait. I only plan on replacing the DVD with Blu-rays of titles I really want. Things that tend to really show off blu-ray. I don't plan on updating comedies, drams, etc that are more story driven than visual driven.

Eventually in a few years blu-ray titles will drop where it would be much cheaper to pick up replacement titles with less cost due to price drops or more sales as blu-ray becomes more mainstream. I often will wait till a 2nd dipping of a dvd drops to around 4-5 bucks via columbiahouse...etc then buy that and sell of the older version for 2-3 buck to friends,,ebay etc, so it only costs a few bucks to updated to a newer version. Especially with ones that add better visuals or extended scenes.

Eventually blu-ray prices will drop so it will be a better choice to upgrade later when prices are better. Of course if your rich and money doesn't matter then just upgrade. It will probably be a long time thought before blu-rays will covers every title you have in your DVD stock as well.

I think you are as George Carlin once said " More Than Happy" in the english language that means you are crazy. I have about 175 DVD's, I am hopefully upgrading about 20. My criterea for upgrading is

1. Is the movie visually stunning
2. will I notice a big difference in the audio presentation
3. Is it one of my favorite movies
