Im thinking of buying the last 2 speaker to finish up our home theatre setup... we have the typical center, sub, fronts, rears...
Just wondering who here has 4 rears? And do they make much of a diff? Wondering if you might be able to post pics? I checked the home theatre thread but didnt see any... Cheers! |

My room is only 12x18, not large enough for 7.1. My 5.1 system fills the room completely.

I've got 7.1, and boy oh boy, true 7.1 discrete content is a revelation. 3:10 to Yuma and War both, IMHO, blasted any of the previous 5.1 reference mixes out of the water in regards to spatial imaging and the "wall-of-sound" effect (both have uncompressed 7.1 PCM).
The only argument against 7.1 right now is that there is limited content. But Lionsgate looks like it is on a mission to change that, as is New Line. If you can, by all means, go for the 7.1 setup. @obiwopkenobi: Actually, true 7.1/6.1 discrete content (such as Shoot 'em Up, Crank, 3:10 to Yuma, War, and Hairspray, to name only a few on BD, plus DVDs with DTS-ES discreet, like Gladiator: Director's Cut, and the LOTR collector's editions) has the extra rear channels encoded discretely, meaning that they have their own unique signals, separate from the traditional SR and SL channels. Now, when listening to 5.1 bitstreamed content, if your receiver applies ProLogic IIx or Neo:6, or if you are listening to content with the extra rear speakers matrixed in (any DD EX or DTS-ES MATRIX track) you will get matrixed content in the extra rear channels, meaning it is extracted from the other discretely encoded channels. In that case, what you hear from the extra rear speakers likely will be almost a duplicate of the traditional SR and SL channels, albeit a bit different. |

I do, and the difference depends on how you like ti listen your movie. If you want to watch the movie with no DSP (digital sound processing) you might not se mush difference beacause there is'nt many movie encoded in 6.1 or 7.1, if you like to DSP your sound it will depend on the sound system and how mush monoral sound you have in the back.
By the way a 7.1 configuration is 6.1 sound with the surround back playing the sam thing |

I had 7.1 with all satellites. Now I have 5.1 all full range speakers, which I am much happier with.
When I move into a new house though and get a dedicated HT room with more space I will add another pair of full range speakers to the fronts and move each one back one slot. I'm keeping full range speakers all around in anticipation of the first 7.1 high resolution audio-only release. ![]() That's incorrect, a 7.1 configuration with a 7.1 source like the PCM found on 3:10 to Yuma, is a discrete 7.1 sound, it is not the surround back playing the same thing. |

What brand/model speakers do you have now for the surrounds?

I have my 7.1 set-up with the Surround Right (SR) and Surround Left (SL) level with my primary seating position. My Surround Rear Right and Surround Rear Left are behind my primary seating position. With 7.1 surround running as it should, I am always stunned by how much of a difference it truly makes.
Ocassionally I will take a 5.1 mix and using the THX 7.1 Neural surround on my Onkyo 705 will simulate a 7.1 mix. On action movies this is an absolute MUST. I'm hoping 7.1 channel will become a Blu-ray standard. It really makes a difference in completing the surround sound experience. |

question:
If you have 7.1 setup, but you are playing a 5.1 movie. What happens to the 2 back speakers? Do they just stay quit? If they do stay quit, wont those 2 speakers give static noise? |

I have 7.1 + presence speakers.
I recently discovered that the presence speakers do not turn on at the same time as the rear speakers and are only used to make the sound feel more like a specific environment or location (i.e. Radio City Music Hall, Notre Dame, or something like that). I usually just leave those off and use the 7.1. |
