I had 7.1 with all satellites. Now I have 5.1 all full range speakers, which I am much happier with.
When I move into a new house though and get a dedicated HT room with more space I will add another pair of full range speakers to the fronts and move each one back one slot. I'm keeping full range speakers all around in anticipation of the first 7.1 high resolution audio-only release. ![]() That's incorrect, a 7.1 configuration with a 7.1 source like the PCM found on 3:10 to Yuma, is a discrete 7.1 sound, it is not the surround back playing the same thing. |

When I had my home theater room built, I had it pre-wired for a 6.1 channel setup. I worked with Genesis Home Technologies, which is a local home theater specialist, and they do a ton of high end home theater installs. They handled my home theater setup and whole-house satellite and computer networking. My speakers have monopole transducers that radiate out 180 degrees, so we felt that 7.1 might be overkill in that room. The 6.1 setup works incredibly well for me, and it offers an incredibly immersive surround experience.

I have 7.1 + presence speakers.
I recently discovered that the presence speakers do not turn on at the same time as the rear speakers and are only used to make the sound feel more like a specific environment or location (i.e. Radio City Music Hall, Notre Dame, or something like that). I usually just leave those off and use the 7.1. |

What brand/model speakers do you have now for the surrounds?

I have my 7.1 set-up with the Surround Right (SR) and Surround Left (SL) level with my primary seating position. My Surround Rear Right and Surround Rear Left are behind my primary seating position. With 7.1 surround running as it should, I am always stunned by how much of a difference it truly makes.
Ocassionally I will take a 5.1 mix and using the THX 7.1 Neural surround on my Onkyo 705 will simulate a 7.1 mix. On action movies this is an absolute MUST. I'm hoping 7.1 channel will become a Blu-ray standard. It really makes a difference in completing the surround sound experience. |

question:
If you have 7.1 setup, but you are playing a 5.1 movie. What happens to the 2 back speakers? Do they just stay quit? If they do stay quit, wont those 2 speakers give static noise? |
