I wonder if they will discuss his racist viewpoints, because even though it is not publicized much, he was a racist. And please don't tell me that he freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation and that how can he be a racist if he did that, because that piece of paper did nothing for the slaves. I don't want to get into an argument about it, just wanted to throw the idea of his societal views out there.

The thing is that standards back then do not match standards of today. Lincoln was a great leader and though he may not be the goody-two-shoe that most people see him as he wasn't an evil man either. Trying to put the man down is a rude and uneducated move... I look forward to this movie. Both Neeson and Speilberg have worked wonders together, lets hope this is nothing less of amazing. |

I sure am looking forward to this. I love Liam Neeson but I wonder if I like that they are using a non-American to play an American President... it just seems weird to me but w/e.

Does that mean he was a racist? I leave that open. It could certainly be interpreted he was if he thought freed slaves should go to Africa. However, he also considered Frederick Douglas a friend and called him "his dear friend and brother". So, there's the two sides of the coin. He did believe slavery should be abolished, that much is certain. Racist? I can't make up my mind. |

I figured I'd bump this. Has anyone heard anything else on this film? I'd really like to see it get made. It sounds like it won't be 2011 though.
I was unaware that Robert Redford is doing a similar film about the assassination but in the view of John Wilkes Booth and his fellow conspirators. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0968264/ This is a recent article about the Lincoln project by Dreamworks. ![]() Don't Worry: Spielberg Hasn't Given Up On 'Lincoln' Worried that Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" — an Abraham Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth film starring James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn — has killed Steven Spielberg's long-gestating "Lincoln" project being written by Tony Kushner and hopefully starring Liam Neeson in the lead role? Never fear. Variety has an entire story about the fact that Spielberg remains undeterred and will continue to pursue the project regardless. "We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible," Spielberg himself told Peter Bart. Evidently, Kusher is revising the script — once thought abandoned at Paramount and now at Dreamworks - and the story will focus on the president's anguish over the length and toll of the Civil War (or at least that's what it was focused on before. Sounds like this could change). So "Lincoln" is still somewhere on the docket, though "Harvey," the tale of the lovable looney who has a imaginary talking rabbit as a friend, is evidently next. Worried that Spielberg will tackle a bunch of mainstream crap for Dreamworks in the interim like a Pirates movie and other populist nonsense like that? We can't reassure you there. Now that his company is at Disney, and Dreamworks recently received a $325 million dollar loan, he might want to use that money towards solid-gold box-office projects before he tries to get adventurous. It might be a while before "Lincoln" rears its head, but fans of "serious" Spielberg (us) as opposed to "fluff" Spielberg obviously can't wait. |
