Talking Great article revealing why HD DVD will not win, nor even survive...

Is it Time to Give Up on HD-DVD?

http://www.devindra.org/tech/2007/06...e-up-on-hd-dvd

My favorite part:

The players are cheap, but that’s mainly because the Toshiba is bleeding money on the hardware. By the end of this year we’ll most likely see Blu-ray players around $300 anyway. (I think it would be suicide for HD-DVD to try and undercut them then.)

Great reasoning. The only thing they failed to mention was that there has been an influx in the demand for family movies. You look at animation in the 80's and early 90's there was little or no difference than cartoons from the 50's. Today's animation showcases better detail and crisper images than most real-life movies. You look at any Blu-ray collection and you are bound to find a few animated titles. Once Pixar and Dreamworks step up, the HDDVD format will be on it's dying breath.

I agree with this 100%. The major kids movies are killer apps. I'll rebuy them all.

Dreamworks SKG is owned by Viacom (which also owns Paramount). I think Paramount and Dreamworks are operated independently.

Dreamworks Animation is independent.

Paramount handles film and home video distribution for both.

"Soon after the DVD standard was completed, Toshiba refused to start developing a new HD standard with Sony when they asked. They thought it was too early to start worrying about HD. When coupled with the fact that Toshiba got all the royalties for the DVD format, it makes a certain amount of sense that Sony didn’t want to settle on a standard with them again. (That still doesn’t excuse their behavior, though.) ".

My response to that statement would be, "what are you talking about, 'doesn't excuse their behavior?' It's a perfectly logical reaction to being shut out of the DVD royalties. I'd be like, "F^&* you guys (ie., Toshiba), you don't wanna share? well, we'll take a shot at developing our OWN, BETTER format to compete w/ yours, and if we win, maybe you'll learn to COLLABORATE next time!"

I'm sure Sony isn't completely blameless, but it now makes sense that if Tosh made a ton of $$$ keeping Sony out of DVD, they would have the incentive to try to lock Sony out of the HD disc market, too.

I have no idea where this comment belongs, but here it goes. Universal and Toshiba were some of the major players in DVD winning over DIVX way back when. I believe Universal did some R&D for DVD. So they have a vested interest in HD-DVD winning becase they probably get a portion of the sales. So I bet you will see Universal exclusivly support HD-DVD for a long time to come unfortunatly.

it seems like Toshiba is trying to use the same formula for beating Sony as they have in the past...

inferior technology for a cheaper price
porn studio support
relying on universal studios

there are more...but I am brain farting right now..
