I'm no expert on the acting process, so take my comments with a grain of salt if you like. That said, I really don't place many actors on pedestals, and it confuses me when others do. Sure, there's several I'd like to meet someday, but I can't think of any who I'm such a fan of, that I have to watch everything they do.

For example, I think Michael Keaton is a very good actor; no one else could pull of the brilliance of characters like Beetlejuice, or the four Dougs in "Multiplicity". He's also a highly underrated stand-up comic as well, and I liked his performance in the recent "RoboCop" film. That said, there's also some stuff he's done that I'll never see...and its the same way regarding other actors.

For all his acclaim, I've never been overly impressed with Johnny Depp. I do like a number of films that he's in, but (with the exception of PotC where he was quite animated) he doesn't seem to do much except wear the same blank expression. Just not a lot of emotional range. He always comes across a bit flat to me.

There was a time when his willingness to take risky, edgy roles was admirable but he's managed to turn that into a schtick.

And a fairly boring one at that.

Jennifer Lawrence - she only won an Oscar for being popular (Naomi Watts should have won but that's for another day)
Benedict Cumberbatch - a very boring actor whose number of fans outweigh his range (also, he cannot carry a movie)
Miles Teller - the whiniest actor in Hollywood not named Justin Timberlake
Mary Elizabeth Winstead - from the two female leads from Sky High, I never got why she got the big roles but Danielle Panabaker got stuck in low-budget horror films and TV movies
Rooney Mara - only has a career because of David Fincher and her rich family, her sister at least has talent but gets stuck in bad movies most of the time
Bill Hader - too unlikeable in my opinion
Chris Pratt - nothing more than boring muscle
Bradley Cooper - he comes off as a total creep and roles like Silver Linings Playbook don't help

Harrison Ford. Yes he's been in some outstanding films, but he's never stood out. The only "great" performance he's ever given is in "witness" and he was very good for the role of Indiana Jones, since I cannot see anyone else in that role. With that said, pretty much every performance he's given, including Star Wars, is pretty flat.

Not only that, she is dumber than a brick wall. She can't even carry on an intelligent conversation for a minute ...

Denzel Washington: If the script requires someone to play Denzel Washington I would still get another actor.

Yes I'm much the same. To me acting is one factor of a performance. All the other things like directing, editing, script, lighting, atmosphere, cinematography, sound design, and so forth have to be on point as well. Most actors in the right role with the right group of people behind them making them shine will do a great job.

That's not to say I don't about care actors or am unimpressed by them... but I realize not every acting performance happens under the best circumstance.

Huh... I actually consider him very under-rated. I've never met a single person who would call him a "great" actor. Your assessment of "great roles, one-dimensional performer", is the general consensus, I think. Whereas I think that he is and always has been very good, very authentic and convincingly passionate.

Chloe Moretz. I think people are too easily impressed when child actors are cast in dark, edgy roles. The fanboys were beside themselves over her performance in Kick Ass and since then she can do no wrong for some. A kid who swears and kicks ass, OMG, how transgressive ! To me everything she does feels studied and never spontaneous. She isn't terrible, but she's also never really that great and she hasn't shown a lot of range.

I agree with Denzel Washington. He may be technically a good actor, but you can tell that he is someone with absolutely no sense of humor and he drains the joy from everything he appears in.

Seems like a lot of you are confusing charisma and/or personality with acting talent. Practically none of the people listed in this thread are raved about because of acting talent, aside from the ones who actually are ****ing horrible, like Slut Lawrence.

People like Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg aren't popular because they are the best actors of their generation, but because many simply find them interesting to watch.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Daniel Day Lewis, who is the biggest ****ing bore on screen.

Default drugs are bad, m'kay

Who really cares if somebody took drugs when they were younger?? I consumed a massive amount of drugs ('soft' and 'hard') when I was a younger man but I choose not to do so any more. What's the big deal about that? A huge amount of the world's population have done exactly the same damn thing. Do you really think that earlier behaviours should be held against people for the rest of their lives? And how exactly, does that element of past life even have any bearing on a "actors who are considered these great talents, but you don't quite see it" discussion?

He was quite good in Shame, but that is not everyone's cup of tea.

My pick, James Franco. I really don't get the love of this guy, I actually think he's quite $hitty

My contraversial choice would be post-Scarface Al Pacino. I often found his later performances to be quite embarassing in comparison to his earlier film work.

There Will Be Blood, Gangs of New York, Last of the Mohicans were boring performances???

Also, Lincoln, My Left Foot, The Boxer... Were all AMAZING films... To each his own, not calling you out, just saying I completely disagree with this opinion.
