I'm no expert on the acting process, so take my comments with a grain of salt if you like. That said, I really don't place many actors on pedestals, and it confuses me when others do. Sure, there's several I'd like to meet someday, but I can't think of any who I'm such a fan of, that I have to watch everything they do.

For example, I think Michael Keaton is a very good actor; no one else could pull of the brilliance of characters like Beetlejuice, or the four Dougs in "Multiplicity". He's also a highly underrated stand-up comic as well, and I liked his performance in the recent "RoboCop" film. That said, there's also some stuff he's done that I'll never see...and its the same way regarding other actors.

Yes I'm much the same. To me acting is one factor of a performance. All the other things like directing, editing, script, lighting, atmosphere, cinematography, sound design, and so forth have to be on point as well. Most actors in the right role with the right group of people behind them making them shine will do a great job.

That's not to say I don't about care actors or am unimpressed by them... but I realize not every acting performance happens under the best circumstance.

With that said, pretty much every performance he's given, including Star Wars, is pretty flat.
Huh... I actually consider him very under-rated. I've never met a single person who would call him a "great" actor. Your assessment of "great roles, one-dimensional performer", is the general consensus, I think. Whereas I think that he is and always has been very good, very authentic and convincingly passionate.

Chloe Moretz. I think people are too easily impressed when child actors are cast in dark, edgy roles. The fanboys were beside themselves over her performance in Kick Ass and since then she can do no wrong for some. A kid who swears and kicks ass, OMG, how transgressive ! To me everything she does feels studied and never spontaneous. She isn't terrible, but she's also never really that great and she hasn't shown a lot of range.

I agree with Denzel Washington. He may be technically a good actor, but you can tell that he is someone with absolutely no sense of humor and he drains the joy from everything he appears in.

Seems like a lot of you are confusing charisma and/or personality with acting talent. Practically none of the people listed in this thread are raved about because of acting talent, aside from the ones who actually are ****ing horrible, like Slut Lawrence.

People like Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg aren't popular because they are the best actors of their generation, but because many simply find them interesting to watch.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Daniel Day Lewis, who is the biggest ****ing bore on screen.

There Will Be Blood, Gangs of New York, Last of the Mohicans were boring performances???

Also, Lincoln, My Left Foot, The Boxer... Were all AMAZING films... To each his own, not calling you out, just saying I completely disagree with this opinion.

In Dark Shadows, she actually managed to be worse than the film itself. That's saying something.

Wait... when has Denzel ever played anyone but Denzel?
Sure, I'll admit that sometimes Denzel is guilty of what quite a few other actors tend to do on occasion. Which is to say that he often falls into the trap of just playing himself (many A-List Stars can easily begin to habitually follow this trend, such as George Clooney, Harrison Ford, etc...), but there are some excellent exceptions to that rule, times when Denzel treated fans to great portrayals, such as in...

1.) "Training Day"

2.) "He Got Game"

3.) "Fallen"

Three great, entertaining films. you may not have enjoyed them, although maybe you did ...I wouldn't know. But either way, Denzel gave compelling (and certainly not the usual run-of-the-mill performances in each of these features). Hell, the man won an Academy Award for "Training Day" (one of the few times I actually agreed with the Academy).

Johnny Depp is an awful actor who gets blown up out of proportion because the better part of a whole generation (or is it two generations now?) wants to sleep with him; and the only reason Chloe Moretz is a big deal, is because she is the (not so) secret crush of a bunch of creepy pedophiles.

... and the only thing Gosling can act like, is a pud-pulling idiot.

Depp once had talent ...and Chloe is okay as an actress ...and Gosling ...ummm Gosling uh... aww who am I kidding ...Gosling might be able to pull off the role of a pud-pulling idiot if he had several more years of intensive acting classes.

I hate to admit it, but I'm definitely not the most computer savvy poster!

Side Note: I actually have to admit that really enjoyed at least one Mark Wahlberg film ..."Three Kings". I don't really know very much about him off camera, but truth be told, I love film, I couldn't really care less about an actor's/actress's personal and/or religious beliefs, politics, drug/alcohol abuse, sexual orientation/proclivities, etc... I don't even care if the person is a total raging horribly abusive racist. It's like this ...if I truly enjoy listening to music produced by a certain artist (or viewing paintings, sculptures, plays, films, etc... produced by a certain artist, than I won't stop enjoying the art itself just because I find out the the artist himself/herself is an A**Hole). I'm just able to separate the art from the artist. A particular singer or actor may prove themselves to be an abusive, racist ass, but if I enjoy listening to their music or if I enjoy watching films that they are in then I'll just continue to do so. No disrespect intended, as everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but I learned a long time ago ...just because I enjoy someone's art, doesn't guarantee that I'd actually like the person themselves if I ever had the opportunity to get to know them.
