Default The PS3 media server question

I tried the PS3 media server, and it works.

I was able to watch some movies (most are unwatchable for me, only mpeg2 codecs were watchable for me), listen to some music, and watch some pictures.

But, I also wanted to watch MGS4 trailers, that I have on my PC. They are HD, but that shouldnt matter. They have a .WMV extention.

Now from what I understand, the PS3 uses Windows Media player 11, so it should be able to display .WMV extentions right?

Or am I simply forgetting something?

Edit: BTW, this PS3 media server thing is an awesome feature!

From what I understand you are still limited to the PS3's codecs. That would mean only the file is being accessed from your computer. Your computer is not decoding the file and streaming the image to the PS3.

Hmm, that might be the solution.

How do I actually make my PC stream to my PS3?

I got Windows vista, and Media player 11.

Btw,
When I try to open a video on my PS3 I get the following message:
"A connection to the media server could not be established.
Check the setting for the media server and network devices."

My connection is just fine, I able to open most the files. But most movie files, I am not able to open.

I don't believe you can stream the images to the PS3, because the PS3 is really doing most of the work...not the computer.

Maybe you have a software/hardware firewall between the PS3 and your computers.

You need to configure your media player to accept connections. There is a thread on here about that.
The other part is that you need to either disable your firewall (not recommended) or create an exception with your firewall to allow media file sharing. If your using windows firewall, by default it will not allow you to create exceptions.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > and uncheck the box "don't allow exceptions"
This should allow media file sharing and your PS3 should detect your computer. If it doesn't, go back to your windows firewall and click on the exceptions tab and see if the boxes "windows media player network sharing service" is checked. There are probably several of the same box! These all need to be checked. If you don't see these boxes, that means that media player hasn't been enabled for sharing.

Go to media player, go to Tools >(if you don't see the menu hit the alt key) Options> Click on the library tab and click "configure sharing". Check the box "share my media" and then you have either allow each individual node to access your computer, or if your on a private and secure network, go to settings and check "allow new devices and computers automatically" only do this if your on a secure network, otherwise anyone can access any of your media content!

I use Nero MediaHome. I can stream anything to my PS3 wirelessly and there is no slowdown. You lose some quality as it autoadjusts depending on how much bandwidth is being used, which I think is pretty neat. You can change that if you want to something specific, but you will have slowdown.

AVI's play fine for me, as do most other codecs that the PS3 doesn't use. I also can't play WMV's from last I check though as well.

http://tversity.com

I have been using that for over 2 years and it works well.

The only complaint I have now is that the latest version has a "Pro" so to get all the latest features you will have to pay. It will have full streaming TV etc.

Anything? Does that include Windows Media Center recorded TV files?

I've had some video files not play with PS3 media server, but they would play when I used Twonky Media.

The guys above that were complaining about PS3 Media server not streaming anything to PS3 obviously have some firewall / network issues.
In my case i did not even have to tweak anything much. I have both Windows Media server and PS3 Media server on my main PC. Both can stream files to PS3 just fine. PS3 Media server supports pretty much all audio and video file formats, way more than Windows media server. Contrary to what people were saying above, PC does decode the formats to something that PS3 can accept. For example, VOB folders or video files in MKV container, etc.
My main gripe with PS3 Media server is that for some reason it does not want to save configuration changes. For example, default transcoding buffer is set to 400 MB. That is not enough for some file types. According to PS3 Media server Transcoding tab, maximum supported is 600 MB buffer. I can change it there, but no matter how many times I click "save" button. next time I load PS3MS it shows 400MB buffer again. When the buffer fills up then the stream starts to stutter.

PS3 media server is great but my PC makes this cracking noise everytime I access it. I don't know why, does this happen to everyone? Is there a way to make it stop?

I would not blame PS3MS for that ...
No, my OS3 does not make any noises like that. You might have an issue with your hard drive though.
