Question Onkyo 606 with PS3

Hey, first time post on this site, I've read the discussions on here for a while about both the PS3 and receivers which led me to buying a Onkyo 606. I really like the amp and my PS3, but my amp has just a little bit of static with all the speakers when it is at max volume but that's not a big deal since I never need to listen to it that high. But with my PS3 (video and audio to the amp over HDMI) there is quite a bit more static even at moderate volume levels so when there is quiet parts in a game or movie, it is quite noticeable. I have my PS3 set up for PCM over HDMI, and I think I have everything set up right. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? I've thought about getting a better power bar with "Clean Power" or whatever they claim, are these worth it? Thanks for any ideas.

Hook it up without hooking the amp up, if there no noise, it's definately your
amp, i beleive also your ps3 should be set to bitstream for audio......

check the thread for setting up 605/606 there shouldn't be a difference....

Good luck bro

Odd - I haven't noticed any static at all playing my PS3 through the 606.

I doubt a power conditioner will be the cure, the effect from those is subtle at best. Unless - do you have any dimmer switches on the same circuit as your HT gear? They are notorious for "dirtying up" the power.

No, in order to get the lossless audio like dts hd-ma, dolby truehd and uncompressed pcm, the ps3 needs to be set to output the audio as pcm not bitstream. If you set it to bitstream you will only get regular dd and dts since the ps3 can't bitstream these codecs to a receiver. Setting it to pcm allows the ps3 to decode the lossless audio and then sends it as pcm to the receiver to be amplified.

What Firmware version do you have on your PS3? After I did the 2.40 update we were playing Guitar Herro III last weekend and I had static coming through all channels? I believe the static issue may have been linked to the HDMI connection. After I quit the game, I tried a music file and everything sounded OK. When I started the game back up however the static was still there. I ended up turning the PS3 off and back on and that corrected the issue. Although I have the 805 sometimes the handshaking (HDMI) between the TV and the Onkyo or the PS3 and the Onkyo hang up. Check your HDMI cable, try another one, or try the optical/coaxial connection to see if the static goes away on the receiver.

Do not listen to this advice, it is wrong.

The static is likely from some type of noise. Is there any heavy equipment near by, like a dishwasher, dryer on the other side of the wall, etc? If not, then there is probably something wrong with the power supply on the amp itself. In which case, you will have to get a new one.

I'm just wondering, when playing a TrueHD track on the PS3, the Audyssey light does not light up @_@, and yes PS3 is set to Linear, receiver says PCM, MultiCh, the Audyssey lights up when playing a PCM track though
