Default DVD Piracy still on the rise?

Quote:
With black market sales of bootlegged DVD movies costing Hollywood studios about $6.1 billion in lost revenue annually, illegal copying of pre-recorded DVDs (primarily TV programming) increased 8% in the first six months of 2008, according to a new report.

In an online survey of more than 5,000 consumers from the United States and the United Kingdom, 33% of respondents (largely 18- to 24-year-old males) said they had copied DVD movies, according to London-based Futuresource Consulting Ltd. more
Im guilty

I guess blu-ray will hamper this until its cost effective to copy them

Although I love movies..... All of mine were purchased with case/cover-art etc...... I have a friend, however, who has accumulated 4,000 + DVDs via netflix....... Most of the time he's burning them, and snding them back without time to watch them..... I don't get the point I guess.

I have netflix 3 at a time and can't keep up with it.

It only takes 2 days to exchange a disc so I have to watch 1.5 titles a day. I watch something everyday but never watch 2 things.

So,.. I also don't see the point in what your buddy is doing. Chances are he just wants the stuff and may not watch half of it.

I wish the Blu Ray encryption would work and piracy would become a distant memory and .... those FBI anti-priracy warnings would start being put after the movie on optical discs.

(Some studios already put that stuff at the end of the disc after the credits.. bless their hearts.)

I used to pirate movies and games because i simply couldn't afford it and was frankly young and naive.

I haven't pirated since i bought a ps3 and honestly don't see myself doing it for a very long time.

There's the issue...

If you buy a movie and rip it and put it on your Media Server or NAS, does this count as a pirated copy?

My opinion it shouldn't, since you bought a legal copy and your not distributing it or selling tickets to watch the movie.

This is too true. Let me tell you. Two people I work with have said they do this. One, her father-in-law rents pretty much every DVD that comes out and copies them and gives copies to family members. Another, an older lady, near retirement age, says she will buy one copy of a movie and then copy it for everyone in her family. She says why should everyone have to buy their own copy.

When you get people thinking like that, no wonder Hollywood is worried.

It's nothing new. They did it with VHS too as well. Now, it's just easier and faster to make more copies without having to re-record movies in real-time.

A lot, and I mean a LOT of people make copies of music CDs and DVDs. It's something Hollywood has always been worried about. WIth the internet, they are becoming more accessible than ever.

So yes, I can see why they are worried even more nowadays.

I'm a good boy. I only buy select movies (I'm not one to try to bolster my collection) and I prefer original artwork and such so it's official releases or bust.

I always said that copy protection would attract the movie studios.
I can recall one of my earliest threads almost 4 years ago where I suggested it.

When the world becomes nearly all blu the copying of discs should be virtually extinct because the copy protection is much tougher. But I am also realistic in knowing that any encryption can eventually be broken.

HD DVD had the right idea. Just don't make HD DVD burners.

+1 I agree here. Having to get up and put a movie in and then blah,blah,blah.... when you could just sit from your couch and just call up any number of movies (that you have actually purchased) and have access to them via your HDD, it's called convienence. Most of us like it in one way or another (I like to tinker with my system and I set it up in a way that no one can use it but me my version of convienence ha ha haah!!!) Really people, the pirate issue will remain because whatever is encoded is intended to be decoded. Someone who has nothiing to do all day but figure this out will do it. I don't endorse it, nor do I pirate, but it's not going away anytime soon.

And that's the point - don't make the burners. Burners give people the Hardware to duplicate, but the lack of HD-DVD burners didn't stop pirates either. People began converting HD movies into other HD (albeit compressed) formats such as WMV-HD and DIVX-HD. but I see and agree with you also on the quoted statements +1!

Yeah, but I bet its a bad quality copy! Nothing beats the original disc. This is why theres a problem with HD, the quality is so good even the bad stuff would be good. Buy your movies - for your personal enjoyment - I don't even take movies to friends houses, if they want to see it, come on over.

Pirating has been here forever and will never go away. I agree, however, with everyone who says, "don't make the burners". That would at least slow piracy down.

Disc copying won't be extinct, just signifigantly reduced. Right now it's simply a game of cat and mouse. They change the CP scheme, pirates counter a few weeks later. If they can protect that first few crucial weeks of sales, it's a success for the most part.

I've said that from the beginning. Make the computer versions something different enough that they cannot be used period to play back movies, or produce discs. Unfortunately there are other forces at play that make that untenable.

You can never do that and have a successful format. End of story.

That would had made a better argument if we were talking about VHS.

We are now living in the digital era. It's different with DVD and other digital formats, it varies, but you can make a perfect copy if you choose to not re-compress it. Now, if we were talking about the quality of blank discs, then that's a different argument. Some blank discs may not last long since they are not sealed like they are in the factories.

Blitz is right. My computer is hooked up to a HDTV, I watch DVDs on it using my computer sometimes.

A lot of people I know like to use their computers to play movies on.

Agreed!
I occasionally take one of my BD laptops + powerbrick when I visit a friend(along with a few discs and my HDMI cord).
We play some LAN games, and then light up the HDTV with a couple BDs.
Sure makes HD from D* look like crap!

His kids like when I visit! Cars, Chicken Little, The Wild, and Alvin have a few miles on them.
He still has to convince the wife to get a player...

We won't get into the whole straight to disc from camcorder or editing THEN to Blu-ray Disc thing.
