Default Wider than widescreen

Technically speaking, isn't a movie NOT 1080P when in fact almost 1/3rd of the screen is taken up by black bars?

It's become so easy for movie manufacturers now: gone are the days when they used to re-format movies to fit the domestic TV, now they just flop it on a disc any way in which they please.

With a 37" screen it's annoying to have a slit of a movie, I'd much rather get what I pay for which is a movie licensed for home use. Rant over. I guess I'll have to get a bigger TV.

Cool

1080p is the resolution of the tv. You're referring to aspect ratio. Movies with black bars still display at 1080p. aspect ratios of 2.35:1, 2.40:1 display black bars so that you see everything in the picture the director intended you to see. Other aspect ratios as 1.78:1, 1.85:1 fill the entire screen, and if your set is capable, will also display at 1080p. You're outta luck if you don't really care for the black bars, a majority of widescreen movies will have them. You could always change the aspect ratio on your tv or player to zoom out the bars, but then you'd be jeopardizing PQ and distorting the image. go for a hi-def projector -- probably won't complain about black bars with 100" screen!!

The widescreen you're refering to is a TV broadcasting standard...
