Does anyone else buy these?
I just got the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack, and I am completely blown away by it since the last time I played it I was about 12 years old and didn't appreciate it. Makes me want to play it all over again, I'll see if I can dig up those discs! |

I have...nearly everything by Yasunori Mitsuda and Hitoshi Sakimoto. I also have all the Final Fantasy games, including X-2 and Crisis Core. I don't get the remix, best-or, or piano mixes though.
Hmmm...what else. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Persona 3, Silent Hill 1-4 (need Origin if it's out there somewhere), Ar-Tonelico, .hack//GU, .hack//GAME, Battle Arena Toshinden 2, Folklore, Shadow Hearts 1-3, Shadow of the Colossus, Xenosaga 1-3...etc. Kow Otani, Yuki Kajiura, & Kenji Kawai...I got into from Anime soundtracks so it made sense to get their game OSTs as well. All amazing! |

![]() FFIX is the only one I have had trouble completing, it took me a good six months, whereas VI, VII, VIII and X were incredibly addictive and I had them done in three or four weeks. Don't even get me started on the follies of FFXII, it was terrible and the score was all over the shop. It just goes to show how important Nobuo Uematsu is to the series. Hopefully XIII will have a better score, but with Uematsu only doing the main theme, I'm not so sure. |

Of course Max, there are others that buy these sound tracks and more so care about the original intent of said OST music.
![]() But as a younger adult, not knowing that such things existed like video game music export cd's -- I did it the ghetto way. Putting save points during or right before my favorite tunes in various games, or recording it on tape. With the advent of BBS and Internet, it was that and a combination of MIDI and MOD. In fact, my Tales of Phantasia MIDI of Moria Gallery that I authored is still floating out there on various sites. I have to agree that FF8's soundtrack is pretty decent. I think FF7's was a little bit better. FF9 well.. it seems me and you diverged from the series (or had disagreements with it) at or about the same time. I loved FF1-8, didn't really enjoy 9 at all, 10's OST was really spectacular even though Uematsu only composed maybe a 1/4th of it and I felt the game was great, and I felt that 12 was a tragedy. 12's music was subpar at best, and that game really should not have been titled a Final Fantasy game, it could have stood on it's own as a separate title/series. The dynamics were so different, so unlike FF, that after 12, I do not have any hope of desire for FF13 if they continue down that path. I didn't even bother playing past the 10 hour mark, and I don't feel like forcing myself to play it. But on the case of OST, I won't stop there, as the 16-bit Era had some really fantastic and overlooked music as well. The SNES really had a decent sound engine for the time. As a result, some great OST's came from it. FF4's overworld music is still today one the 'best' in my opinion that Uematsu made for the overworld. Baron castle, under world, sylph cave, giant, lunar surface, boss 2 music, and even the Zeromus music just rocked. I remember being in awe the first time I heard it on the SNES. FF5 was Ok, it had some good points and low points. The end dungeon, Gilgamesh battles, final merged world, etc were great. FF6 seemed like a great rebound, as the entire game had fantastic music. I think the only one I didn't like was the place where Gau was, the destroyed overworld music. Other goodies include the Secret of Mana OST. Was there a bad song on this one? Dragon Quest 5 and especially 6 had some winners as well. Another overlooked OST is Soul Blazer and Actraiser (Enix). Although the vast majority of the US hasn't played Terranigma (EU/JPN), or Tales of Phantasia (SFC), i'd say that ToP even outscored some of Uematsu's best and Terranigma was a very close second. I left out Chrono Trigger as this one is obviously included. Digging back a bit to far perhaps, the 8-bit era. Those are reserved for Final Fantasy 1, and DQ 1-3. Although DQ1-3 were remade for the SFC, it never made it to American shores. Alfgards theme still is haunting, and Dark Alfgard theme really pulls the heart strings even on 8-bit. The SNES versions of DQ1-3 were even better. I would say that many people who played DQ8, do not realize the flying music is an updated version of DQ3's flying music. The N64 had some really good tunes as well. Ocarina of Time is one of my all time favorites, and Dire Dire Docks from Mario 64 can be considered one of the best OST songs of all time for that series. If you're interested too Max, there's many symphonic compositions of the 8-bit and 16-bit era available for import, along with the 32-bit era. DQ music from a symphony sounds pretty darn good. ![]() Last edited by jason_grumpy; 07-10-2008 at 04:01 PM. |
