Default Pirates: frustrating loading viewing experience

...and no, I'm not talking about the movie itself, but the BD.

Playing Pirates of the Carribbean Curse of the Black Pearl on my Sony BDP-S1 tests my patience. Has anyone else heard of this?

After loading the disc in the S1, it's a VERY long wait while the movie loads and goes through the entire slate of 4-5 trailers and the "Downloading Movies is Illegal" video, not allowing me to advance through them. I can fast-forward through the trailers, but then after the final trailer (for The Prestige), it sits on a black screen for about 60 seconds before FINALLY getting to the main menu.

My S1 has the latest 1.6 firmware upgrade, so that shouldn't be the reason for this frustration.

Any ideas what's up?

Thanks, bferr1. That was good therapy to watch that. It exactly mirrors my attempts to play the movie! Very tempted to return it for a refund.

I responded to that video.

Stupid video. Only proves that the person that made it has no life - let alone realizes his TV is TOO DAMN BIG for the bedroom. Oh and his TV is a Toshiba. LOL.

Good response! You should have added, that should teach him for buying a $999 player over the $599 PS3 (the fastest and most capable HD player on the market).

Sounds like the Java processing isn't very fast and that's slowing down the system. A new firmware update *might* improve it, but then again it might not, depending on how much room there is for optimization. On the bright side at least the disc plays - if you were on the HD-DVD side you could be boiling your copy of the Matrix HD-DVD in the hope that it'll make it work.

Does the 'liar' game work on the PS3?

And how does the 'Pirates' disc in general work on the PS3?

No issue with the discs and my PS3 either...I just clicked through the previews and had the movie playing in less than 90 seconds

I have the same problem, but I try to be patient because the transfers are Demo-most irritating is not being able to skip the previews.

Same here...

And I didn't bother with the games - they are junk on a movie disc imo!

If I wanted to play a game, I would throw a game BD into my PS3...

I have tried the game on Dead Man's Chest Liars Dice and it layed perfectly on the PS3. The scoundrels of the sea thing on the curse of the black pearl also worked perfectly on PS3. I think it's just that some players arent fast enough to handle Disneys' awesomeness. Yes, I know, awesomeness isnt a word....but it should be!

Review of Liar's Dice running on PS3.

The screen caps there are photographs, not direct feed grabs.

It's strange how the PS3 doesn't have any issues with the PotC movies. I myself watch my Blu-rays on my PS3, and I can skip through the previews/warning and even with the Java feature loading, from the time I insert the disc to the opening title of the movie, its under a minute. As far as Liar's Dice goes, I have played it, and it runs smoothly. Not a very deep game, and after a short time, I can see myself getting bored of it.

Same with me. So I did return the movies, and bought two more. Brought them home, and the first one works now, and the second one works, but the game does the same thing. Unless you hit the button that says you want to learn the rules. That worked once.

Once.

I am begining to suspect the sound may be the driving factor as to why the movie does not work on the SONY players, but does on the PS3. PS3 does not have digital sound, correct? Didn't I read it's analog? At the very least, no HDMI, correct? Maybe it's HDMI at issue here?

I had the same issue with those discs, I've also upgraded my firmware to 1.6.
Be patient there is another firmware update coming soon so that might fix it. I had the same problem with The Decent and 1.6 fixed that for me. Also keep in mind we have first generation players and not all of the bugs have been gotten rid off even in this late stage of the game. I will be upgrading to the BDP-S300 when it comes out(especially if it's $499 ) it will more than likely not have the same issues as the BDP-S1. On the PS3 front, It's one of the most solid Blu-Ray players on the market, because it has to be, even though it plays Blu-Rays people still look at it as a "$600 dollar video game machine." and to insure it's success it has to be good. So just be patient my friend because POTC is worth the wait on Blu-Ray.

I had no trouble with the disc, movie or game on the Panasonic.

I won the game without missing a round so it is not too difficult

As for the trailers, you can chapter jump to the next one as soon as it starts one. So it is annoying but you don't have to watch or even FF the trailers.

Cheers!
