Default BDP-S300, 3.95 firmware, Cloverfield locks up + more

I have an unusual problem. I have a BDP-S300 with the latest 3.95 firmware installed. Originally I was running 3.65 and Cloverfield started freezing up about 20 minutes in. After that it errored saying "cant play disc" on the player.

I updated firmware to 3.95. Put in Cloverfield, plays for almost 60 minues straight, then freezes up again and errors with "cant play disc". After this I swapped in V for Vendetta on Blu Ray. Immediately "cant play disc". I swapped in a REGULAR dvd.."cant play disc".

I haven't tried it again since but my suspicion is if left sitting for a while it will start playing properly again.

If I end up having to call Sony for RMA I will probably just sell this thing and sadly get a PS3. I don't want another gaming console I just want a reliable blu ray player. Any suggestions?

with the player in the off position, try unplugging it from the wall for a minute then plug back in. Give that a shot.

(also try resetting back to factory settings on pg.53 user manual)

Do you know someone else with Cloverfield BD or a BD player? You might see if their BD works in your player. I had a bad Blade Runner disk, swapped it out and it worked fine.

Well I brought the disc to work and tried it in the PS3 in the break room. Played fine all the way through.

Looks like I'm screwed. I haven't tried the factory reset mentioned in this thread, I might give that a shot, but I'm ready to cut my losses and sell this thing and pick up a new player -- or more likely a PS3.

Default "can't Play"

I received the same message on my BDPS300. I'm getting this message (CAN'T PLAY) on several BD's I have played successfully before. I updated to 3.95 last week with no problem, in fact, menu navigation was improved. Now...nothing works. I contacted Sony support and tried their troubleshooting methods (unplugging the unit, resetting the player to its original factory settings, etc.; in fact, I got the feeling the support tech knew less than I did) but there's been no fix. This sucks as the player's only 13 months old (which makes it one month past warranty).

Has anyone seen this message and been able to fix the problem? Sounds like a hardware issue to me...

Not sure. Sounds like a problem with the player, unrelated to the firmware update. Can you get it serviced and pay for it, or is it even worth it? 3.95 has been the best overall release for me. Good load times, good navigation, no reboots upon fast forwarding through previews (happened on 3.90). Sorry for the bad luck, and I hope you find a good resolution.

I've contacted my credit card company, and they double the warranty period (i.e., up to 2 years) on purchases made on the card. Sounds like I can send it in for repair at no cost.

For those of you with a dead BDPS300 past warranty (such as myself), you might keep that in mind before dropping another $400 - $500. All may not be lost...
