Default i have a newbie question :)

when i am watching my blu ray player how come Black hawk down on blu ray is only half the screen and the rest blacks??? can i make it full?? why is it half?? how do i know what movies are full or half screen??

If half of your screen is black it sounds like you could have it configured wrong. Can you post a screen pic?

aspect ratio is 2.4:1, so the top quarter and bottom quarter of his 16:9 screen are black.

1:85 should take up the whole screen.

Where are the black bars? on the sides or on the top and bottom?

Assuming you mean the top and bottom are black, as in "letterbox", than yeah, the other posts point it out. The OAR (original Aspect Ratio) of most films is not the same as the aspect ratio of your TV. All Blu-rays try to stay true to the OAR which means you will still see many movies with letterbox, and a few with pillarbox (black bars on sides).
This is a GOOD thing, cause you see the entire image. If the bars weren't there, you'd be loosing information because they would have to cut off the sides of the film.
