Thumbs up Samsung Shows New LED LCD TVs

Samsung demonstrated at its Holidays in July product show this week a new two-model flagship LED LCD TV series. As Samsung’s second-generation with LED backlighting and local dimming, the product now uses 120Hz technology and also effectively doubles its predecessors’ dynamic contrast ratio.

The Series 9, slated to ship in August and sell through limited distribution including PRO Group members, Magnolia AV and other select A/V specialists, according to Samsung’s Dave Das, senior manager for visual display product marketing, will come in 46- and 55-inch sizes at $3,199 and $4,199, respectively. Added to the sets’ features roster is a highly marketable 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio specification. Their 120Hz technology is enhanced by black-bar scrolling, and the sets can now achieve a four-millisecond panel response time, he said.

The models also carry another incarnation of Samsung’s cosmetically distinctive Touch of Color; their bezels are tinged with a charcoal grey that serves to differentiate them on the sales floor from nearby competitors. InfoLink and WiseLink Pro technologies enable digital content management directly through the sets.

Das also said that the sets’ “green aspects” – namely, their mercury-free LED backlights and their EnergySaving Mode that adjusts the backlight brightness to low, medium or high to reduce power consumption when appropriate, will be advertised to consumers. Even the infusion method by which the color is added into the bezels, he said, is a “greener” way to go than by painting on the color, resulting in lower CO2 emissions during the manufacturing process.

He added that the sets will command about a $300 to $400 premium over similarly sized sets in Samsung’s Series 7.

The company has also earmarked for August release its MediaLive extender ($200), which permits Samsung HDTV owners to easily view content stored on a single PC running either Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate. Up to five of these extenders can work with the PC either via HDMI CEC cables or wirelessly. The extenders can also allow consumers to access various paid online services like CinemaNow and Vongo.

Samsung also displayed and demonstrated the Tru2way DVR STB model SMT-H3090, a dual-tuner digital video recorder that will allow cable subscribers to watch and record two high-definition programs at the same time. The first iteration of this box, due out in Q4, said Rich Long, senior manager of the Digital STB Group, will be sold directly to Time Warner Cable and is at the integration testing stage with Comcast, with other cable companies expected to come on board thereafter. He added that a more fully featured piece may be introduced at a later date for retail sale.

Also exhibited was the LN40620A1, the world’s first integrated LCD Tru2way high-definition TV, featuring a built-in card slot. To be released for the holiday sales season in 40- and 32-inch 60Hz versions with pricing as yet undetermined, the sets are suitable for second- and third-TV locations through the home, said Long. No HDMI cable hookup is needed and all functions are controllable through a single included remote.

Samsung Debuts the Evolution of Functional Art With New Slim Bezel "Touch of Color"™ LCD HDTVs
EnergyStar®-rated Series8 850 and 860 LCD HDTVs Build Upon Revolutionary Design

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics America Inc., the market leader in HDTV design and innovation, enhances its "functional art" home technology collection with the introduction of two new LCD HDTVs. The Series 8 850 and 860 LCD HDTVs feature a next generation implementation of Samsung's ToC™ (Touch of Color™) design – a new slim and narrow frame with a depth of 1.9 inches at its widest. In addition to rose (850), Samsung now offers its innovative ToC design in deep blue (860). The Series 8 delivers a crisp full HD 1080p picture with up to a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, and features Samsung's latest Auto Motion Plus 120Hz™ and Ultra Clear Panel technologies for continual rich details and lifelike color.

“Samsung’s Series 8 LCD HDTVs represent the company’s proven dedication to offer consumers new applications and performance levels that enhance their TV viewing experience,” said Jonas Tanenbaum, Vice President of LCD Television Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “Sporting our latest ToC narrow bezel and slim design, the Series 8 combines cutting-edge technology and stylish design for the home. While picture quality is always a priority, we have also focused on connecting consumers with their own digital content, pre-loaded digital content from the Content Library, or online RSS feeds of the latest news, sports and weather from USA Today via our InfoLink service.”

Series 8 850 / 860 Full HD LCD TVs

Slim and Narrow Bezel with a Touch of Color

Samsung continues the tradition of introducing innovative design with a next-generation iteration of its innovative Touch of Color. For consumers searching for a TV that is ideal for mounting near flush against a wall, the Series 8 has a new ToC design that is half the width of conventional flat-panel TVs at a mere 1.9 inches deep at its widest point. The Series 8 also features minimal edging around the screen, just enough design to appreciate the beauty of the TV when turned off and its superior picture performance when on.

Implemented in Samsung’s Series 8 flat-panel HDTVs, ToC is an innovative design that infuses color in the black bezel by employing dual-injection molding technology. Since color is infused and not painted on, no volatile organic compounds (VOC) are emitted during the production process reducing CO2 emissions.

Ultra Clear Panel and Wide Color Enhancer 2

Taking picture clarity and crispness to a new level, Samsung's Ultra Clear Panel is designed to improve contrast ratios and produce deep black levels. Able to perform in any lighting condition, the Ultra Clear Panel ensures that the TV flawlessly displays bold, bright colors and deep, dark black tones. For vibrant and pure onscreen portrayal of nature-perfected colors, Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer 2 technology maximizes the expanded color range used in HDTV broadcasting. By strengthening the reds, greens, and blues, depth and intensity are added to images that may appear weak on other displays without over-saturation. Users can appreciate the look originally intended by the movie director, or game developer.

Auto Motion Plus 120Hz™

Designed to minimize the motion judder and image blurring that can occur in fast-paced action scenes or sports broadcasts, Samsung's Auto Motion Plus 120Hz™ technology estimates and inserts an extra frame between frames to create a smoother viewing experience. The extra frame renders images that flow more naturally, allowing even the quickest action scenes to be presented with lifelike precision and clarity.

InfoLink™

Further positioning the HDTV as an entertainment hub in the home, the Series 8 LCD HDTVs include the one-button, on-demand InfoLink™ RSS service. Powered by content from USA Today, InfoLink instantly displays news, weather, and stock information onscreen via adjustable overlays. As the ultimate form of convenience for the always-connected consumer, InfoLink allows users to view stock quotes from their personal portfolio and local weather information. Connect the TV to the Internet, and there is no need to change the channel to get a five-day forecast of the weather.

Digital Content Connectivity and Management

The Series 8 LCD HDTVs offers a host of connection options to enjoy a growing library of digital content. Simply plug a memory drive or digital camera in the side-mounted USB 2.0 port, and WiseLink™ Pro turns the television into a jukebox or photo album. The TV recognizes not only MP3 and JPEG files but also XviD and MPEG4 videos. In addition, it comes with a Digital Content Management feature that allows the user to sort images based on usual parameters like time and unusual ones like color and composition. Additionally, the Series 8 LCDs are compatible with DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) for easy connection to and content sharing with other DLNA-CERTIFIED™ products, such as a computer.

EnergyStar® Rated

Aligned with Samsung's efforts to combine technological advancement with environmental awareness, Samsung's Series 8 LCDs feature a unique “Energy Saving Mode” making the HDTV compliant with the latest EPA EnergyStar® rating system. By selecting a low, medium, high, or auto setting, the HDTV’s backlight brightness is adjusted and power consumption is substantially decreased compared to similar 2007 models.

The Series 8 850 LCD HDTVs will be available in September in the 46” class (45.9-inch measured diagonally) and 52.0-inch sizes (model numbers: LN46A850 and LN52A850). The Series 8 860 LCD HDTVs, which include an additional USB 2.0 connection and a variation on the bezel design, will be available in similar sizes (model numbers: LN46A860 and LN52A860) at select retailers in September.

Wireless LinkStick Accessory

For added convenience, the Samsung Wireless LinkStick allows consumers to access the InfoLink feature on the Series 8 LCD HDTV wirelessly. While a connection to the Internet via an appropriate modem and wireless router is still required, consumers will no longer need to run an Ethernet cable directly to their HDTV. The Wireless LinkStick (WIS-08BGX/XAA) is available now at an estimated selling price of $34.99.

Samsung Delivers 2nd Generation LED-Backlit LCD HDTV with New Series 9 LED LCD HDTV

Series 9 LED LCD HDTV Features Auto Motion Plus 120Hz™ and Ultra Clear Panel

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics America Inc., a worldwide leader in innovation and HDTV technology, unveils the successor to the company's award-winning 81 Series LED LCD HDTV, with the launch of the new Series 9 LED LCD HDTV. The 2008 flagship Series 9, Samsung's 2nd generation LCD HDTV to use LED SmartLighting™ technology, offers consumers the powerful combination of LED and 120Hz technologies, resulting in a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for a crisp, full HD 1080p picture. The Series 9 is also distinguished by Samsung's new addition to the art-inspired ToC™ (Touch of Color™) design – an elegantly patterned bezel with charcoal gray accent. Beyond delivering a superior picture performance with craftsman-like design, the Series 9 gives consumers the freedom to easily access and manage nearly all forms of digital content via the TV through innovative features such as InfoLink™ and WiseLink™ Pro.

"Combining Samsung's LED SmartLighting and Auto Motion Plus 120Hz technologies in one high-performance LCD HDTV, the Series 9 LCD represents Samsung's continued focus on advancing the very highest picture quality available to consumers in the current HDTV market," said Jonas Tanenbaum, Vice President of LCD Television Marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

Superior Picture Quality

As Samsung's second generation LCD HDTV to use advanced LED SmartLighting with local dimming technology, the Series 9 LCD HDTV is able to achieve dramatic contrast levels and express "actual black levels" by completely shutting off a pixel's light source, eliminating the grayish black picture plaguing many LCD HDTVs. Conversely, groups of pixels can be locally controlled to produce more light increasing the brightness of the Series 9's picture when necessary.

Furthering the Series 9's ability to show deeper black levels, Samsung's improved Ultra Clear Panel technology eliminates ambient light reflection that may affect picture quality, ensuring perfect picture clarity even in bright viewing surroundings. By enhancing color reproduction level, Samsung's Ultra Clear Panel technology also lets consumers enjoy the detail and vibrancy of colors.

Adding to the superior picture quality in the Series 9 is Samsung's Auto Motion Plus 120Hz™ technology that reduces the motion blur caused by fast-paced content. It’s ideal for diehard sport fans, avid gamers, and movie mavens alike.

Connecting to Content

Always seeking ways to expand the possibilities of the HDTV, the Series 9 LED LCD also features Samsung's InfoLink™ RSS service, which gives touch-of-a-button access to news, weather, and stock quotes. The Series 9 also plays MP3 music, JPEG photos, and video files stored on memory drives, other digital devices, or PCs with Samsung's WiseLink™ Pro and DLNA technology.

In addition to WiseLink Pro where consumers can utilize the USB 2.0 access to display home movies and pictures, Samsung's Series 9 comes with internal flash memory pre-loaded with premium content giving consumers access to a vast library of digital content to enjoy, including high resolution artwork, cooking recipes, exercise routines, children's programming, and games.

Connecting to external components such as Blu-ray players and HD Camcorders is even easier as the Series 9 comes equipped with four (1 side, 3 rear) HDMI-CEC inputs to control the latest home theater products using a single remote.

ToC (Touch of Color) Design

Continuing Samsung's line of Touch of Color™ HDTV, the Series 9 strays from the traditional black, box-like bezel for an elegant charcoal gray bezel with a honey-comb pattern. To create this distinctive effect, Samsung uses dual-injection molding technology, a process commonly applied in the design of premium automobiles, to embed color within the material. This technology wraps the bezel with a translucent coating and controls the density of the transparent and opaque material used in the process, resulting in a subtle yet unique look with distinct gray and black gradation.

EnergyStar® Rated

Aligned with Samsung's efforts to combine technological advancement with environmental awareness, Samsung's Series 9 950 LCD features a unique “EnergySaving Mode” that ensures the HDTV is compliant with the EPA’s EnergyStar® rating system. By adjusting the HDTV’s backlight brightness with a low, medium, or high selection, power consumption is substantially decreased compared to similar 2007 models.

Additionally, because of the unique Touch of Color manufacturing process infuses color into the TV’s bezel without any painted on color, no VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) are emitted for lower CO2 emissions during production. By using LED backlighting rather than a traditional cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL), the Series 9 950 is also mercury-free.

The Series 9 LED LCD HDTVs will be available in August in 46” class (45.9-inch measured diagonally) and the 55” class (54.9-inch measured diagonally) sizes. (Model numbers: LN46A950 and LN55A950).
