By anal I mean do you obsess over the condition of the discs and how to keep them in pristine condition in ways that most other people couldn't care less about as long as they keep working?
I recently came to the realization that I'm an extremely anal, neurotic head case when it comes to my beloved blu-ray collection. I loaned my three-season boxset of Deadwood to my next door neighbor's kid, under the precondition that he be extremely diligent about keeping the discs scratch free. A few days later he returned season 1 and I immediately performed a thorough inspection of all the discs, only to discover a couple light scratches and some fingerprints...FINGERPRINTS!!!! I started having a panic attack...heartbeat skyrocketed to near fatal levels...all ability to think rationally or maintain any sort of baseline cognitive functions ceased. I immediately initiated a diagnostic examination of the disc, which consisted of looking at it closely under bright lamp lighting for about 20 minutes and fast forwarding through each disc to make sure they still played properly. ...everything checked out okay. But the feverish rage that was surging through my body refused to go away. It was all I could think about for the next four or five hours. I had just paid a hundred bucks for that boxset and this little demon f*ck stick had tainted an otherwise immaculate collection of discs. Now he wants to borrow my Breaking Bad boxset and I told him that from here on out he's cut off....that he'd have a better chance of scoring a pound of raw heroin than of ever borrowing another blu-ray from me. The thing is, he's been really generous in lending various movies and shows to me over the last three years or so. He turned me on to The Wire, Justified, Boardwalk Empire and a bunch of other great stuff. And he doesn't give a flying you-know-what whether I leave fingerprints on the discs or not. I could urinate on them and he wouldn't care...as long as they still play. It's a very awkward situation, because I've known his parents forever. ...but a man's got to do what a man's got to do. No, that's crazy.
I lent Riki-Oh out months ago. I hope to get it back sooner rather than later, in the condition it went out in (like new). But I'm not losing sleep over it. Several of my older BDs were once rentals, and probably have some scuffs. But I haven't bothered to check. Similarly, years ago I lent my friend my Wire boxset. Going against my directions, he then lent to his dad, his granddad, and his sister. It was years before I got it back, and by then I noticed that part of the case was broken. I can only imagine what the discs look like, and basically never loaned him anything again. But, it's just stuff. It's like getting into a fender bender and costing yourself a quick $1000. Sh#t happens, let it go. Last edited by jthefrank; 02-20-2015 at 07:42 PM. |

It's not just a question of functionality for me. There's something deeply obsessive inside of me that cherishes the aesthetic quality of a beautiful, mirror-like disc, devoid of any and all signs of human contact. ...the voices won't accept anything less. |

I just don't lend them out. My main problem is half the time I would forget that I lent them out and it would go unnoticed until I wanted to watch the movie. Then I would start thinking...WTF I know I had that movie! I treat all my stuff well because I spent my hard earned dollars on it. In other words, if anyone messes something up now, it's me.
Disc off shelf > movie in player > movie back in case > movie on shelf. They stay in good shape that way (unintentionally really) ![]() |

I generally take care of my things, always put them straight back into the case when I'm done, etc.. But don't get too fussed about them either. The limit of my paranoia extends to keeping my steelbooks separate so that they don't get dented/scratched. My regular blu-rays either stay on shelves, or sometimes get moved into a closet (i.e. in a bankers box) - but I really don't worry much about them. |

Yeah, I'm pretty anal. Back in the DVD days I lent a movie out to a work colleague, he ended up carting it around in his gym bag and when he eventually returned it to me, it was pretty much trashed. The only person I ever trusted to lend my movies out to after that was my late father, who was just as finicky as I was. Nowadays, I'm lucky in that none of my friends are either (a) not into blu-ray or (b) not into the types of movies I like, I don't have to worry about it. I just have to make sure my kids are trained well for when they're old enough to want to watch some of my stuff.

I don't worry much about the BDs, their scratch-resistant coating has stood up for me for years, and just about all my discs remain playable and scratch-free. Fingerprints can be rubbed off with a cloth. I even had a former rental of Get Him To The Greek that had horrid scratches, but still worked.
DVDs seems touchier without that coating, but I have a disc repair kit (had a manual one for the longest time, but recently switched to an automatic) that's been 99% successful (that 1% would be for my copy of I, Robot, which had an unfortunate meltdown due to voltage differences in Europe...long story). Haven't had too much trouble with unplayable or unfixable DVDs or CDs, so those don't bother me much, and I buy them used all the time. Special packaging would bother me the most; I loaned my Steelbook copy of the Boondock Saints DVD and it came back scratched up. ![]() I guess I'm not that anal about it. Quote:
Still, I'd be concerned if you're getting anginas over every little fingerprint or mark on a disc. There are worse things to worry about, and we'd hate to see you have an early heart attack because somebody scratched a disc. ![]() |

I used to be overly obsessive about my movies. Would return things if there was the least little scuff and was always looking for the perfect slipcover when purchasing a movie. It really became taxing on the mind. Ive learned to take that behavior way down and I am a much happier collector now. Dont get me wrong I still like and keep my movies in good condition but nothing is perfect and always striving for perfection was a miserable way to exist. As for loaning my movies out... I will only lend my movies to certain family and friends who I know are careful with their own things. This way I know I will get whatever I loan them back just like I gave it to them. Just my opinion.

1. I keep my entire Blu-ray collection in plastic storage containers from Target.
2. I've replaced all of the eco-pack cases in my collection with the Viva Elite replacement cases. 3. I do not loan out my Blu-rays. Yes, I'm quite protective of my collection. I'm not as fanatical as others, but I'm more protective than most. However... 1. I'm not obsessive about slipcovers. 2. I do not store my Blu-rays in any sort of order, except for occasional groupings (James Bond movies together, Hitchcock movies together). 3. I do not surround my collection with movie posters or toy collectibles in a shrine-like display. |
