Default Is there a such thing as fake blu rays

Like I've seen a bootlegs blu rays...but today went to the flea market and this one store was selling blu rays at prices that will make u waste your entire pay check. I not sure but they lady had a stack of blu ray movie wrap in plastic then the covers with the pictures..which she would insert the disc in. I've asked for war a movie which i brought at futureshop. the Cover and disc looked legit like everything from the all the pictures from the cover looked like the real thing. I asked her if she can play it and it seem legit like the pq was bluray....but i didn't buy anything...was wonder if they were bootlegs or the real thing because i've never seen a wholesaler with a stack of movies not in the cover and sealed?

Bootlegs do exist. They are usually just bootleg DVDs labeled as blu-ray, or an HDTV or blu-ray rip copied to a DVD. Someone on this forum and the HiDef Digest forums have posted their experiences of receiving a bootleg copy.

Edit- Found one of those posts

futureshop? so ur in canada, which part?

i guess the best way to see if the blu-rays are real blu's is to check if they have lossless audio.. blu-bootlegs ive seen are just dvd's (avchd) with blu-ray pq but not the aq

there could be bootleg BLUs though, the media is getting cheap, but it still doesnt seem worth it yet

ive seen people try to sell fakes.. they're easily spotted. just just for the hard coating. you can feel the back, or even look at it, and tell its got hardcoat.

Yes, there are bootlegs, just like there are DVD-R and DVD+R.

Either she stole them, aquired them from someone else that stole them, or they are bootleg DVD's labeled as Blu-Ray. I think blank BD's are too expensive right now for bootleggers to make a profit from right now. Sure maybe in another 2-3 years they'll be cheaper and indepent companies will start producing their own media on BD's, but at the moment, unless they're stolen, I don't see anyone selling them any cheaper than they are in stores.

$10 isn't that cheap. Tower.com did a $11 deal on Bladerunner for me, thats 5 discs not 1. If they came from the factory or bought from distribution they could possibly sell them for that. But realistically I'd say they were excess stock from somewhere like Blockbuster.

Yeah cheap BD25 media are 10$, DL are around 22$ or more, burners are 300$ + empty box are 1$, etc...

The only thing have seen is bluray case + fake cover + DVDR inside as far as bootleg

Try the scratch test to test the hard coat say "Hey you know the protective layer on blu-ray's, would you mind taking your finger nail and scraping it along the back of the disc?"

If you tried it, you must've bought one, no? Pop it into your PS3 (that I see in your sig) and hit the display button. What's the bitrate at? If it's above, what- 4.5(?) then it's a blu-ray.

Lossless audio would be another way to check as was mentioned. I have a feeling they're just stolen- possibly from a rental place as they don't have cases.

Weren't hd-dvds fake Blu-rays? I suppose someone could try to sell unsold hd-dvds as Blu-rays.

Most likely it is stolen or lost merchandise. Whatever happens to the products that "fall off the truck"? They get sold often at places like that. So it is probably a real Blu-ray. I don't believe we've seen any actual bootleg BD-Rs yet, at least in the U.S. There have been reports of people faking BDs when in fact they are just regular dvds dressed up to look the part.
