This was an article in The National Enquirer. I can't believe ABC stooped to that level and reported this as news. The Enquirer doesn't even list any sources. It's probably someone who writes for them that reads the forums here.

Do I need to post a link?

I don't think there was any stooping involved, they've been down to that level for quite a long time.

For the record, Bale has already done 3 movies for Nolan and could do more...
If a director finds an actor that delivers and who they feel can run with a part, they tend to keep them.

JOHNNY DEPP is tipped to play BATMAN villain THE RIDDLER in the next installment of the comic book movie series.

After the huge success of The Dark Knight, which has taken $440 million (GBP220 million) at the worldwide box office, producers are confident they can convince Depp to take on Christian Bale's Batman on the big screen.

And, according to the National Enquirer, studio bosses also want Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman onboard to play another of the Caped Crusader's arch-foe, the Penguin.

The Riddler was played on the small screen in the 1960s by Frank Gorshin and in 1995 movie Batman Forever by Jim Carrey. Hoffman would be stepping into the shoes of TV and movie Penguins Burgess Meredith and Danny DeVito. A source tells the Enquirer, "(Producers) are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own. "And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman."

Considering the original source on this one we are going to file this under the RUMOR catagory for now.

Notice their only referring to what the "producers" want.

I'm really interested on where exactly the new Batman series is heading. I'm sort of on the fence about Depp playing the riddler, I guess it could work..but in my mind I just want something darker. Same goes for catwoman. I'm sure i'm just remembering the old batmans and how silly everything was, but with the right workings I'd love to see these characters in the new series.

I think Paul Bettany would be great for the role, he has the look and the acting skills to pull it off its a shame he's never really made it "big" as an actor (so far anyhow)

for those wondering "who's Paul Bettany?"

he's the monk in The Da Vinci Code, the guy in Gangster No 1, and the doctor in Master & Commander

I see what you mean...he would make a cool riddler. Wasn't he in A Knight's Tale too?

Ryan Phillipe is a fantastic actor who could really let loose with a role like the Riddler. And, I've been waiting for Phillipe to take on a role that isn't so straight forward and streamlined... break out of his shell, so to speak. Take his "Cruel Intentions" performance and put a psychotic spin on it. That could be very interesting to watch.

Obvious indeed!

I think Jennifer Connelly would make an excellent Catwoman/Selina Kyle.

Hmm, she could be an interesting choice. She's definitely a great and underrated actress. I'd much rather someone of her stature than someone like Angelina. Just my opinion.

all those who say johnny depp couldnt pull it off, remember! when they said heath ledger was gonna be the joker we all thought he would suck! but look how it turned out. So as far as i see it. everyperson we think cant pull it off, they can if Nolan picks them.

Paul Bettany..... better known as Mr. Jennifer Connelly. (I mean seriously, how'd he pull that off.)

And yes, he was the funny guy in A Knight's Tale.

come on guys you got to admit even though the source is ridiculous, and unreliable it is still a cool thing if johnny depp plays the riddler.

thats whats weird about tim burton films. they are all good films by all means, but theres just something about them that will never be "great". Like sweeny todd was cool like you said but its just too predictable.

You're absolutely right, in my opinion. I've enjoyed many of Tim Burton's films because I've always loved dark films, but there's something about his that leave me a little short. I don't "love" them. I enjoyed Sweeny Todd, but it was predictable, and I doubt I'd have a desire to watch it again. I think the only Burton films I have on standard DVD are Batman, Batman Returns, and Big Fish. Visually, his movies are always fascinating to the eye. I'm not sure if it's the stories, characters, plots, or what, that really prevent me from loving this guy's work like some others do.
