It will be interesting to see what limitations the studios impose on Blu-ray recording manufacturers in the U.S. They basically crippled the hard drive based dvd recorders in the U.S.

My thoughts are that it is the manufacturers yielding to content provider influence rather than manufacturers themselves imposing limitations.

IMHO, it does not help that Bu-ray inventor Sony is also a big content provider. Perhaps Sony has forgotten that they contributed to the US Supreme Court decision that stated that recording for your own personal use is legal.

I'll keep hoping, and hopefully, a stand-alone Blu-ray recorder will be released that does not provide "crippled" recording capability.

The limitations on Blu-ray recording were hammered out when the format was finalized and HDCP was implemented with HDMI. A Blu-ray recorder cannot be made that legally records a Blu-ray disc to another Blu-ray disc while preserving the video and audio quality fo the disc.

You can record broadcast transmissions to the hard drive and then dub them to BD-RE while preserving the original broadcast resolution. Understandably, you cannot record a Blu-ray disc to the hard drive, so it may then be dubbed over to a new BD-RE.

It's about time blu-ray recorders are released in North America. It would sure be great to be able to record broadcast HDTV (that would require a component input as this is the only format my satellite receiver output HDTV in). But regardless, blu-ray recorders are very useful for creating blu-ray discs from the content of an HD camcorder. Of course, it is possible to do it with a computer, as long as it has a blu-ray burner (itself an expensive add-on if the computer is not already equipped with it like some of Sony's Vaio's), but it is still a 'black art', challenging even for a technology enthusiast like me (you need the appropriate software and everything need to work properly together, something I have not been able to achieve yet ). That's why I imported a blu-ray recorder from Japan last year: I just need to plug the i-link output on the camcorder on the corresponding input on the recorder and I can dub my HD content on BD-R or BD-RE without any complications. (Of course, most new models of HD camcorders don't have an i-link output so I have to continue using the old HDRHC1 or it's back to square one.) And it's also useful as a blu-ray player and for recording standard definition programs.
