Default Blu-ray Recorders Presented by Pioneer & Philips (for PC internal use)

Blu-ray Recorders Presented by Pioneer & Philips (for PC internal use)

Also Pioneer and Philips are present on the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and present several new products, some of them to be part of the nice HD home theatre setup. However the market for stand-alone HD devices in the US has a nice future, PC 'constructors' favor recorders for internal use. For that sector, Philips and Pioneer showed drives with Blu-ray Disc technology.
Pioneer showed the BDR-101A, as promised before. This 5,25"-drive supports the reading and writing of 25 GB (single layer) BD-R/RE discs @ 2x (72 Mbps), DVD-R/+R @ 8x and DVD-RW/+RW @ 4x. The playback is limited to BD-ROM/R/RE, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/+R en DVD-RW/+RW. The BDR-101A doesn't seem to know what to do with CD based media. The drive will be launched the first quarter of this year, carrying a pricecard noted $995. The burning of Blu-ray Discs, $50/disc, will be an expensive hobby for the early adopters. The bosses at Pioneer stressed also that "the existance of Blu-ray Disc recordable media only serves to promote the production of Blu-ray media and actually has practical use for studioproductions.

The limitation concerning CD media, doesn't apply to the drive, announced by Philips, named the SPD7000. This TripleWriter™ can't only read at a double transferrate and write on 25GB single layer BD-ROM/-R/-RE discs and 50 GB dual layered variants, I is also capable of dealing with discs, type CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+RW and DVD-RW. The SPD7000 transports data from and too the PC, using a S-ATA connection. The drive will appear in the second half of 2006 on the US market.
