YES!!! I've been holding back on buying the DVD set (which has been going for pretty cheap).

Sweet. This was one of the best series I ever witnessed on the Civil War. The only one I liked better was Smithsonian's Great Battles of the Civil War.

The fact this is made to be broadcast to me suggests it'll be done in 16:9, so maybe don't bust out the party poppers just yet.

If it's stretched I am not buying it. If it's open matte I will still buy it.

Should be no issues with framing

Quote:
This is the first time the film will be seen with the exact same fidelity and framing as the negative that Burns and his co-cinematographers Allen Moore and Buddy Squires shot over 25 years ago

So it will be 16:9. It's the ratio it was shot in, not how it was presented.

I hope it's multi-region, I'll buy it. I have the DVD set, I'm really interested in the American Civil War, so bloodthirsty. I think that was down to it being the first war where rifles were used a lot (accurate & deadly).

Based on other PBS releases, I doubt that it will be region free.

I love all things about the civil war. I need to collect more blu rays about this ugly part of our history. It's too bad it happened, but it did. I'm all in.

Sorry, I phrased that wrongly; if it's framed differently than originally presented, as it says it will, it's still wrong.

It was shot 16mm, so it will have been shot and framed 4x3. They probably just mean it'll have a bit more image on all four sides. Which may have always been intended as part of the original composition anyway.

Oh man, this is pretty cool. His best documentary by far and seeing those old photos in HD will be nice.

I had almost given up hope of this happening! This was an amazing series, putting Burns and his style on everyone's radar and creating his reputation as the foremost documentarian of American history of his generation.

I second the hope that this is followed by Baseball and Jazz in HD on Blu-ray! Thanks, PBS!

Great news!

Would also love to see Jazz (2001) and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (2005) on Blu-ray as well.
