Default Onkyo 705, playstation 3 question?

I am new to all of this so here is my question. I have a PS3 and a Onkyo tx-sr705 all hooked up using HDMI. I have downloaded the latest firmware for the playstation 3. While watching lets say Weed's Season 3 on blu-ray I can press the display button on the PS3 remote and at the top of the screen it says 7.1 DTS HD MA. Does that mean its decoding and sending that audio to the Onkyo?

Also should the listening mode on the Onkyo be multichannel to get the 7.1 DTS HD MA?

yes and yes. its decoding dts ma and sending it in pcm form. thats the reason it says multch. if you press the display on the remote (below and to the left of the directional/enter stick) it will display the amount of channels and pcm.

Your receiver should be on some type of multichannel mode, yes. But you should be getting DTS-MA, especially if your PS3 says it is.

You can use other modes when listening to the playstation, but multichannel will be the best. This mode will still apply your equilizer settings and audyssey calibrations. Direct will not apply anything so if you want to apply the equilizer setttings (custom or audyssey) you must listen in multichannel.

If the playstation is internally decoding a HD soundtrack, your 705 will say multichannel. mine does! if youre bitstreaming the HD codecs your receiver will read trueHD or DTS-HD MSTR.

PS3 does not bitstream lossless.

No, it decodes it internally and sends it out in LPCM. Personally I like to see the HD light up on my receiver!

Home Theater Addict, I have always wondered what prevents my new onkyo from showing dts-hd ma and dolby true hd. I too would like to see the hd light up on my receiver. If it is the ps3 that is preventing this, I would like to know what other options there for a blu ray player that won't do this. I have been saving up for a stand alone player for a while because I would like to just use my ps3 for gaming because where I have it, it heats up pretty fast. I would appreciate if someone could give me a suggestion on a good quality player that will allow the hd light to come on.

you are telling me you want to buy a new blu ray player because a light will not come up on your receiver?
why would you ever be looking at your receiver in the first place?
It decodes it internally so the sould is not going to be different

That will never light up with the PS3! Most all of the new gen players will bitstream the audio codecs and you will see it on your receivers display

there is a difference between the reciever doing the decoding and letting the ps3 do it.you will never see tru hd or master audio on your reciever's display with the ps3.it cannot bitstream the hd codecs and never will be able to do it.i own a ps3 and a panasonic bd30 as a standalone.i have them both hooked up to an onkyo 805.enormous difference in sound quality between the two.the panasonic bitstreaming the hd codecs via hdmi completely blows away any kind of sound the ps3 produces.even the picture quality is better with my panny.the ps3 cannot bitstream the hd codecs through hdmi,so that is why you will never see your lights on your receiver light up.where your reciever says multichannel it should be saying dts-ma or dolby truhd.the panasonic bd 50 will be out soon ,so i recommend that as a standalone if you want a 2.0 profile player,if not save yourself some money and just buy the panasonic bd 30.it will give you your hidef codecs your craving but just won't have the bd live options.

since you are sharing the picture settings for both players...one will "look better" by default.

I heard that onkyo is releasing a blu ray player at the end of the year and have been waiting for that. Do you know if that will bitstream the audio? And to circuit city, read my post closer, I am not just buying it for that reason.

Im sure it would considering all of the other new players do, and they were about the 1st to make HD receivers!
