SUPERMAN RETURNS was I think the first film to use the Panavision Genesis cameras, which are I believe are the most technologically advanced HD cameras in the film industry now. When Singer did a screen test with Brandon Routh, they filmed it in 65 mm just for the Hell of it. And then when they filmed some shots with the Genesis cameras, they saw that the quality was identical. Which really shows in the film.
Singer has tons of overhead shots, deep space shots (the shot of Lois looking down on the streets of Metropolis always make me gasp due to the sheer depth of it), and inserts of close ups that heighten your sense and really draws you into the film. So I'm a firm believer that shooting in HD won't make your film look cheap. I guess it depends on how you use it. Jake Kasdan is another filmmaker who swears by HD. His last two films (THE TV SET and WALK HARD) were both shot in HD and you can barely tell. Last edited by reginaroadie; 08-07-2008 at 12:26 AM. |

The Panavision Genesis camera has no better than 1920 X 1080 pixel native resolution. Anyone who thinks that is equal to 65mm photography is stupidly insane. I'll add, Superman Returns is one of the worst looking movies I've ever seen blown up to IMAX format. Freaking embarrassing. BAD. Very freaking BAD. Superman Returns has been playing on HBO in HD in recent days and still looks very stupidly SOFT. The "digital" fanboys can go on and on and on all they like. But they are absolutely lying to themselves if they think some camera that doesn't even do 2K is somehow equal to 35mm or even 65mm. The digital fanboy lies need to be stopped. |

OK, I'll admit to not knowing a whole lot about the technical aspects of the Genesis cameras and 2K resolution in comparison to 35 and 65 mm film. I do know that the last filmmaker to shoot in 65 was Terrence Malick with THE NEW WORLD, and before that it was Kenneth Branagh's HAMLET.
I'm just repeating what I heard about the movie. As for the look of the film, I go more for visuals, composition, color scheme and lighting and not how crisp the image is (I leave that for the guys who review Blu-Ray discs). This is not a lie, this is merely my opinion, which I'll concede may not be well informed. I already battled one flamewar on this forum about SUPERMAN RETURNS. I do not want to do it again. |

You beat me to it. I have to wonder what Panavision paid him for that quote.
The Genesis is 1920x1080 resolution, uses a Super35mm-sized sensor and records 4:4:4 RGB (usually to Sony HDCAM SR tape). As far as digital video goes, it's terrific. Put it up against Super35mm (what it's designed to mimic) and its not terrible. Put it up against 65mm.. please. With the right film stock, you could EASILY extract 8x that resolution from a 65mm negative. Quote:

Most definitely. I was expecting the IMAX presentation to at least come pretty close, but no dice. And then there's no comparison at all with the regular theatrical presentation.

My flames are directed at the marketing people continuing to perpetuate the "digital = perfect" nonsense. The fanboys eating up that garbage are foolish for doing so.
A decent number of movies have been recorded using the Panavision Genesis camera. Apocalypto and The Lookout are two that immediately come to mind. The footage on both movies looked pretty decent for the most part, but not so great in dark scenes or scenes with fast motion. The Lookout had instances of both with the bank heist scene. |
