Default Catalog conversions are no more?

I'm sure this will turn into a good riddance topic as I know these were never popular amongst 3D enthusiasts, but does anyone have actual news regarding Fox Searchlight or Lionsgate converting more of their already released films?

At one time Crank was in line for a conversion but I'm sure that is scrapped.

After Predetor, did it die off?

After JVC developed that conversion station I figured more companies would keep converting but aparently not...

And hello old friends!

Hi JSmith82. Long time since you visited the 3D forum. Welcome back hopefully.

A lot of it boils down to sales. Was it profitable and worth converting and packaging these mild 3D movies for the company? I'm guessing they broke even or less.

They had the technology to auto convert, though I don't think it offered progress for 3D in general, since the results were mild 3D in I Robot and much of Predator (compared to a manual conversion like Jurassic Park or Pacific Rim). If they keep developing the software to match what a human can do and create strong, believable 3D, then I'd be interested in more of these quick auto conversions in the future.

Shame as I really enjoyed The 3D conversions of The Wizard of Oz and Predator while the 3D in Jurassic Park is one of my all time favourite 3D conversions.

Seems like overall 3D is slowly being put to death by studios. Can only hope upcoming A-grade releases revive 3D, like the 'Avatar' sequels. Also, with all the 4K talk, 3D appears to be left behind.

The Wizard of Oz & Jurassic Park were definitely not quick-conversions. They required time-consuming 3D human-judgement, placement-making decisions manual-conversion requires. Same with features like Pacific Rim, Titanic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow, Godzilla, Need for Speed and many others.

IMO, semi-manual auto-quick conversion segments are in movies like Predator and Noah.

JVC auto-conversion station type post-effect conversion seems likely in i-Robot, Jumper, Transcendance and My Soul to Take.

Aren't Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Banshee Chapter both native 3D? Banshee Chapter has excellent 3D and is most definitely not a quick auto convert. Same goes for Noah, excellent 3D.

Yes, thanks for the correction. Per IMDb both Banshee Chapter and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had (dual-strip 3-D) (source format). Noah was converted.

I generally don't buy conversions anyways- as has been said, some of them don't even look very good, and it just confuses the average consumer as to what can and can't be in 3D. I don't even like when they shoot new movies in 2D and release them converted (though I do buy those).

What I meant to say with Noah was that it's a really amazing conversion, on a par with Jurassic Park or Titanic. It's so good, it's a shame to be heaped in with the more average conversions like Predator. The 3D is lovely and strong

Segments of Noah are "lovely and strong". Not the entire movie. There were 273 converted shots. 84 minutes were converted by Prime Focus , 55 minutes by StereoD and the rest by Turner's team in the 138 minute feature. IMO, the 3D is still the better version with several - "several" effective exciting 3D moments.
