Default PS3 problem...don't know what to make of it

I have had my current PS3 since April of this year. There is a hiccup every now and then and I have to shut it off using the power switch on the back. Last night, however, I was watching a movie and when I stopped the movie, the video stopped. After a few minutes, I tried to power it down with the button in the front and it just beeped at me. I used the switch in the back and rebooted it and it came back up.
Is this normal? I don't know if it is a firmware issue, a normal issue or what .
Any input here is appreciated.

Thanks!

Is your ps3 on top of any other components ie: receiver. or is it in an enclosed space where it could possible overheat? BTW which model do you have, 60gb 80gb, 40gb?

It is a 40GB PS3, in an entertainment center with 2 80mm fans pulling the hot air out of the back of the compartment. It never gets over 80 degrees in there. The fans run all of the time.

Well, my PS3 (80GB) freezes up on my primarily playing disc-based games, haven't had it freeze on a movie for me.

I have had no lockups but then I downloaded the 2.41 firmware and it did it once and then after the 2.42 firmware it locked up at least once. I don't know if it is a cause of the firmware or normal operating function. It is a computer, after all, and they lock up too.

yeh i got into a huge debate with another guy on the board it ended as this "firmware changes the command line for hardware, hardware is made by different companies, if the hardware cant handle the firmware its not a firmware issue its a hardware issue"

I have my PS3 on for about 120 hours a week. But before I play games I turn it off for 5 minutes and then power it back on before playing. Don't get me wrong, Its only locked up on my during the GTAIV bug and only like 3-4 times since that. Still its worth mentioning as its happened to me regardless of how rare and infrequent it really is.

your 2 fans will do more harm than good, better have it with 12 inches free on the back, right and top to get it breathe nicely

There is plenty of room for the ps3 to breathe, don't get me wrong. I got the fans from the cooler guys and it is mounted on the entertainment center (cut a hole and installed the fans) so it just expells hot air from the compartment the ps3 is in, constantly keeping the air moving.
I got it because when I didn't have the fans installed, it took 5 min for the fans in the ps3 to kick on high. I put a room thermometer in the compartment and it was 100 degrees. With the fans running, it doesn't get over 80.

Default Sony BDP-S350

I am temped to use the BB warranty that I have and just get the Sony BDP-S350 and not worry about it. The PS3 is used for movies 95% of the time anyway.

After re-reading your intial post, when you hold down the power button it does beep at you, but it may take a minute or two for it to shut down and that is normal.

The system did beep at me when I held the button (which I know is normal), but it had been sitting idle, outputting no video for about 5 minutes (which i didn't think was normal) while I was walking some friends out before I tried that.

Sounds like overheating to me... I leave mine in the open where the temp is a cool 68° most of the time. By leaving it in the compartment, even with holes and vents, you are still restricting the airflow and raising the temperature.
If you leave it out in the open it might collect more dust, but not much more and the temp is much cooler. Simply spray out the vents once a month and dust will not be an issue.

If it overheated, then I would say it is a defect with my system. I have had it on for hours and hours in this compartment and it has never done this. The temperature in the compartment never gets over 80F. If it is overheating at 80F, that is a major problem.

Based on what you've said and your fan setup, I don't think this is an overheating issue. Does this locking up only happen when watching movies, or has it ever happen during games?

What resolution do you have the PS3 set at, what's the make and model of your TV, and how is it connected to it?

It only happens when watching movies. I have the PS3 conntected to an Onkyo SR605 via hdmi and then connected to my Sony KDL-40V3000. It is set at 1080p (auto, actually) with the 24hz option set to auto.

The Onkyo recognized that the PS3 was connected and the TV recognized that the Onkyo was sending a signal @ 1080p. I am telling you this was wierd.
