Default Dynamic Range Compression

I was told long ago to leave this off.I forget why but i remember the person that gave me this information had me convinced.

I have 3 choices today

-Max- Preserves the greatest amount of dynamic range

-STD- adjust the dynamic range to medium when using dolby truehd

-MIN/AUTO- Min, adjust the dynamic range to narrow when this unit is decoding bitstreem signals(except Dolby trueHD)
Auto ,adjust the dynamic range according to the instruction of the input source signals when this unit is decoding Dolby truehd signals

My heart says MIN/auto ,What do you guys suggest

RX-V3800,Samsung bd-p1400

You can't turn it off? If so, that is what you want.

That is what you want for best sound quality. Your receiver has the names written a little strangely though. You think these manufacturers would make it easier for the layperson to understand with a simple on/off choice.

This is a personal choice (and others may mock me for it as they see fit) but I am a big fan of dynamic range compression and have it turned on for both my PS3 and my Onkyo 606.

I choose to use it because I do not care for the way the audio in many recent movies (especially action movies) is mixed. The action scenes are so loud compared to the dialogue that I find it physically uncomfortable to watch them at a volume where the dialogue is understandable.

For instance, with the blu-ray of War, I watched it without any dynamic range compression and I had to adjust the volume by 20 steps (out of the 75 volume settings on the Onkyo 606) between the action and non-action scenes in order to keep the volume at a comfortable level for me.

I say adjust the dynamic range compression to whatever you like and to heck with what anyone else says.

Prerich is correct, leaving it at Max will keep the dynamic range uncompressed. In some instances however, this might leave the soundtrack more suited to theater use as originally intended. If you do run into difficulty with managing levels between action sequences and dialogue only moments, especially at lower volume levels, try switching the range control over to auto. Yamaha replaced its Night listening mode, which lowered dynamic range while maintaining dialogue levels, with the auto mode. Auto mode uses variable range suppression, raising the dynamic range level as you increase the volume.
