Interesting that PS3 appears that it will have 1.3 support.

Default Not to be a wet blanket, but...

where in the article does it state that the HDMI 1.3 spec has been released?

Also how is what is in this article any different than a 6 January 2006 press release?

http://www.hdmi.org/press/pr/pr_20060103.asp

I do hope the HDMI 1.3 spec has been released and all Blu-ray players (including PS3) which ship after 1 September do support it (and maybe those that are shipping before 1 September can be firmware upgraded though I doubt this).

I'm just being a bit conservative here as there is no official press release on the hdmi.org site (that I could find anyway) about the spec being released.

Smile HDMI 1.3 released

One more step along the path.

(Though honestly, these tired old eyes can't see any difference between 36 bit color and 48 bit color.)

The new HDMI mini connector, pictured here next to the regular HDMI connector, is designed to be used with small portable devices such as camcorders and digital still cameras.

I'm not clear on this:

Would the display and player both have to be HDMI 1.3 in order to take advantage of the video improvements?

My best guess: Any device would default to the "lower" HDMI setup.

You can almost stake your entire fortune on this and be safe. You'll need HDMI 1.3 on both ends of the cable to utilize HDMI 1.3 only capabilities. Virtually 100% of interconnect systems default to the lowest format on the ends of the cable. (Some even default to the lowest format in the entire network, but I'll leave those stupid, but common systems out of this discussion.)

I came across this article which pertains to both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.
Here is the link

Point: HDMI 1.3 is NOT firmware upgradeable.

Disappointing, but I can't really say I'm surprised...

Another reason to wait, I guess...

HDMI is a nightmare honestly.

It used to be that a connector just simply worked and everyone designed it into their product.

Now you have to worry about making sure your least common denominator is a certain HDMI version.

Note to the industry I am NOT buying your pre HDMI 1.3 product. I expect my next AVR to last a while so my money stays in pocket until I get TrueHD and DTS HD and HDMI 1.3

I couldn't agree more. The industry needs to decide on a standard and stick with it. My first HDTV only had components. A couple of years back all the talk was that DVI would be needed so I upgraded my set to one with DVI. Now we've got HDMI. At least this time there are HDMI->DVI cables. Sure is irritating though.

Question For my next set of components

I will most likely standardize on HDMI 1.3 compatibility. Right now I've got a mix of component and DVI.

Is there anything HDMI 1.3 does not do that everyone wants? I can't think of anything.
