Default Lamps in LCD flat panels?

I was under the impression that even the new FLat Panel LCDs have lamps but someone told me it doesn't and that it is no longer rear projected like those old rear projection LCDs. so it does not need a lamp. Is he right? If so, how come I keep hearing about the lamp life of my TV?

And....those old rear projected LCDs, are those considered DLPs now? I kind of thought they were different technology but apparently I'm wrong. Anyhow, just curious. Thanks

LCD panel have a backlight (and some newer ones have LEDs). They need a source of light behind the liquid crystals to have a picture.

Default Yup...

Usually a cold cathode flourescent tube too. CCFL. They also tend to talk about how pure a white this CCFL can produce as well... because if you can't produce a pure white no other colors will be as accurate either... or more difficult to keep accurate. LCD starts with pure white... and then subtracts Blue & Green to give you red for example.
Plasma on the other hand... just adds R G B to give you white... it's easier.
