It's high time that SONY deliver on their promise of better PQ by compleating the HD system with HDMI. Why the analogue composite that only returns a negative value in the digital world? The 360 provides better PQ out of the box with their included component video cables.

That's really an inaccurate representation. Not only are HDMI cables cheap, but here's a spanner for your thoughts: if the 360 provides a HDMI or component cable but the user does not use it either because his/her TV does not have the input or he/she doesn't know what is it for, does the 360 STILL provide a better PQ? If you think about it THAT WAY, "out of the box" means nothing if it doesn't come with knowledge to use it to its maximum potential.

Correction:

Sony USED to lose money on every PS3 they make, word on the street is they're getting close if not making money on each system as of recently. Plus, if they make money on their peripherals, then why didn't they pull a Microsoft and only have the PS3 be compatible with their OWN peripherals?

I mean it's not like you can take any ol' harddrive and slap it in the PS3 to allow it to work perfectly does it..? Oh wait! It does!

Microsoft only allows Microsoft brand peripherals on it's system.

The problem is an unknowing public. Why should they think they need to buy extra hardware to view a picure when they see they have every thing they need in the box. This comes from friends who did just that. Their PS3 was connected via the analogue composite to their 16:9 HDTV. So the 360 provides a better PQ out of the box because they thoughtfuly included componet video. I can just imagine hundreds of thousands who followed suit. SONY stands to loose $$$ over sub DVD 480i composite.

I can't defend a poor choice made by SONY. When they include HDMI, many more will see the better PQ of PS3 and blu-ray movies. The connection choice will be made for them, and won't be left to a knowledgeable friend to help them out.

It is beyond me that as we move forward in the all digital 21st century, we seem to be forever stuck in a 80's analogue mind set.

To add more fuel to the fire, the problem is not limited only to SONY. My grandmother had to go to a nursing home a few months back. We got her a new LCD TV for her room. The whole place has satellite - cool stuff. They said they would have a tec take care of hooking up the TV. A few weeks later, we came over for a visit. She remarked on the wonders of thin flat TV, and I gawked at the shimmer and video noise of the RF picture. Looks like it will be a while before the rest of the world to starts thinking out of the box.

I know this might be late but Wal-Mart sells a 3 meter HDMI cable for $20. I have 3 and they work just fine. Don't bother with those $60 monster cables that the Best Buy or Circuit City salesperson tries to sell you. The specs on this $20 cable are well within suggested specs for HD and Blu-ray.

P.S.
The cables are only sold at walmart.com, but it's worth the wait imo.

Default Update:::::

O.K. I got 2 PS3s, so that means I DIDN'T get 2 HDMI cables in the boxes... MAN!! So... I got a couple from Monoprice, and now I'm out $7 after shipping......

Well... I decided.... NO WAY would I buy another PS3, so I decided to get an XBOX 360...... I opened the box, and you're not gonna believe this one.........

They had component cables, but the controller they sent me had a CORD attached to it! Not to mention, It didn't have a Hard-Drive, OR the cooling fan..... what's worse than the fact that it didn't come with the fan, it didn't come with the HD DVD drive...... and something possibly even worse than that, I see that I can't send it back in the box it came from when it gets the Red-Ring-Of-Death, and what's even worse (I know... you're say... "How can it get ANY worse" ) It won't even play my Blu-Rays.... just these HD-DVDs that I have been having a really hard time finding in the stores now............

All in all, I'd say these are all just minor inconveniences in comparison to the feeling of despair when I discovered my PS3s didn't come with HDMI cables......

no no. your 360 didn't even come with the ability to play those HD DVDs... you had to go back out and buy another drive before your 360 could play HD DVDs.

does make the absence of component cables seem pretty trivial. irritating, but trivial.

I picked up a HDMI cable, 6' from walmart for 10 bucks on clearence, marked down from like 15 bucks. Works great.

BTW, to call one system bad over another one because of a cable is just nuts.

Which, in this case, and many others, would still prove useless.

they are already losing $215 per unit sold... The last thing they are going to do is put in a HDMI cable for free

And with built-in Blu-ray, built-in Wi-Fi, built-in, yet upgradeable hard drive in every system, free online play, bluetooth controllers on every system, etc, the PS3 provides a better "out of box" experience in every other conceivable way, and isn't dependent on the user having 1 specific type of connection.

Retailers don't want HDMI cables in the box... end of story.

It's not a Sony thing. HDMI cables should be packed in with every upconverting DVD player, Blu-ray player, HDTV OTA tuner, etc, on the market, but with a few exceptions (mostly Costco type stores), the stores want nothing but crap cables packed in. That's why most everything ships with composite video and stereo audio cables. Stores make a killing on cables/accessories (ESPECIALLY compared to a game console -- PS3s sell for only about $30 over store cost), and while the salesperson is explaining to the customer that they "need" some massively overpriced Monster cable (with INSANE store margins) to hook the thing up, they can also push an extended warranty, gaining the store even more money.

It's not the cost of the cables. We all know we can get them dirt cheap. It's the rest of the world. Why then do I have friends who had an HDTV and digital source and then used composite video? And they are right for using it, because that's what came in the box. Something is wrong here. Is great PQ only going to be the domain of a knowledgeable few? The PC world does not do this to their video, why is it just a TV thing.

That's the point. They provided everything only to crap out at the last mile with composite 480i video. Let me see if the old 25" console color TV in the basment still works, it should work fine with that.
