Default A question on down converting 1080p - 768p

Hi
Seems like you folks know a lot more than the tv sales people, can I trouble you with a in experienced question?
We are considering purchasing a Pioneer PDP5080HD and a blue ray annnd a hd cable box but if this unit is only 768p.
What are, if any the disadvantages of down converting from a blue ray 1080p
to the 768p, a drastic loss in picture? and is this set too limited in signal iput or output
We appreciate any help on this purchase
Thanks

That TV will have better picture than many 1080p sets on the market... and no, there is no disadvantage to downconverting... only that you dont get 1080... but it should still look fantasic.

PS. I am a TV salesperson

Correction: That set will look better than MOST sets currently available, regardless of native resolution. You will not be disappointed.

And it's Blu-ray (no "e"). Welcome to the forum.

Default Thank You - Thoughts on Ext'd Warr?

Would like to say thanks for your feedback, we went ahead and bought the pioneer 5080HD and a sony blu-ray (TV will be here thurs).
I'll p/u a shaw HD cable box around there.
Do you guys have any opinions on the $200.00 monster surge protectors and/ or Future shop's extended warranty.
We got the TV for $1777.00, the BD plyr for $299.00 but wasn't entirely sure whether th ext'd warrany for $499.00 was a good idea.
We bought it on visa which gives an extra year for mfg's warranty - think thats sufficient?
Thanks Again
Jeff

don't know that I would spend that much on a warranty...but if you can afford it, and feel you would like the peace of mind in protection I don't see the harm.

but I also wanted to suggest to you HDMI cables. (they do ship to Canada)

Extended warranties are almost never a good idea. However, if you really feel the need to get one, you can do much better with an online vendor. They all work pretty much the same (use local shops for repair work), so paying local inflated prices are really not worth it. Two of the more popular and recommended providers are:

http://www.mackcam.com/

http://www.cpscentral.com/

Got these from an AVS thread on extended warranties.

Warranties on most electronics are poor investments. If they are lemons they tend to break within the manufacturer's normal warranty period and hence no need for an extended warranty. The only piece of electronics I would recommend a warranty on is the Xbox 360 which might be the worst engineered electrical device to ever sell in mass quantities.
