Default samsung HL56A650 DLP opinions?

hi all, just picked up and upgraded my tv to this samsung HL56A650 56" 1080P DLP tv. got it for a great price at BB. they matched CC price of $1299 . does anyone own this tv out there that can give me any thoughts on it or recommendations? i also have a panny BD30 blu ray player. I know the tv handles 24p and the panny will do 24P, is this the best way to watch the movies?

any adjustment recommendations for this tv? i went on cnet before buyin git for a review and they did not have one, but i read other reviews and they all seem positive. any help would be great, thanks

AVS does have an owners thread.

I got this same model on an exchange because my previous set had numerous problems. No choice but Samsung's choice when it comes to exchanges so either I could have lived with a problematic DLP or exchange it for this model.

I think this model has a nice picture but it too has it's issues. Slight hour glass shape on 4:3 material. Slight horizontal bowing and light/image bleed through into the upper black bar on 16:9 material (Blu-ray).

I am stuck with this TV so I might as well use it for a few years. It does need adjustment like any other TV but the issues I have are too common. No more Samsung for me or DLP's. All they care about is how slim they can make the cabinet which no doubt causes issues. So you might as well go with LCD or plasma.

Once you start noticing these issues it's all you see.(or at least I do) If your set is free of the bleeding, bending then you got lucky. Every tech I have talked to has stated it's a design flaw.

That's my thoughts for what it's worth.

I just purchased this same tv about a month ago.
I paid a little more than you did as well lol

I currently have the ps3 hooked up to it as well. I have the tv in the basement and have very little light that comes in down there.

My only complaint so far is that it seems like i have to adjust the contrast and brightness between movies and games.

I play alot of call of duty and i have noticed that after watching a movie that it just seems to bright for some of the cod4 maps. This could be a personal issue as well but you wanted opinions.

Other than that i am very pleased with my purchase. Its the perfect size for the room its in and has a better picture in my opinion than the 720p plasma i replaced it with. Again could be a personal biased i have always liked DLP sets.

Here we go again i said i liked DLP better than plasma and people are just gonna have to say im wrong.

When will we all learn the tv arguement is like the ford and chevy arguement. Everyone has a manufacture and model they like and will defend it to the end. When in the end its just a car/TV. Opinions are good but no bashing someone for liking one vs another.

Thanks for your input. while i have not seen any of these flaws with mine yet, i am hoping i dont. my budget for the new tv was from the sale of my old one. i was very close to buying a panny plasma for $1599, but would not have any $ left over for a warranty plan or calibration. so i went with this one for now. hope it works out or its going back to BB

so did i make a mistake in buying this tv and not a panny plasma????

i went within the budget to get a 1080P tv. i have had a blu ray player since christmas time and was watching it on a 1080i tv. now i got the 1080P tv and it looks killer to what i was watching.

but now i am thinking if i should have bought a 50" panny plasma?? would i be happier with that?

I look at it this way.
You spent 300 dollars less for a 1080p tv and got a bigger tv for your money.

You can discuss at length plasma vs dlp vs lcd all day long and not get anywhere.

What matters is when you turn on your DLP and watch it are you happy with it?

you could spend all day with what i could a or should a done but in the end for the money i think you got a great deal and a nice tv.

If it makes you feel better i recieved my degree in school for electronic repair and worked at a repair shop for a year. A co worker of mine worked there for 3 years.

We both purchased DLPs.

I hear ya and i am happy. you just read so many reviews on how well the panny plasmas do and how great they look. i was so close to buying one, but money kinda dictated this one. the wife was leary on this one cause about 3 or so years ago we bought a samsung dlp and had alot of problems within the 1st 6 months, so BB bought it back and let us pick another tv out which was the sony 60" sxrd that i just sold. i think i got a good deal and we are happy.

Default DLP is an expensive option in the long term

I have a Samsung DLP and its been with me for around 3 years now. I loved the color and clarity of this technology. However, here is the downside in the long term: It has too many moving parts and moving parts fail. The color wheel on the TV failed after couple of years and I had to replace it for $400. I understand that the bulb in the TV also lasts around 2 years or so, so that can cost another $400. This hasn't happened so far, but I am bracing for it. This really makes me wonder why I ever bought this TV. After all, each one of these fixes is close to the cost of a 32 inch LCD screen TV. I could be happily installing a hi def TV in each room of my home, instead of trying to keep this DLP TV alive. I wish more forums had pointed out this issue when I was buying this TV. It is a critical issue in this age, when we presume some reliability from the big brands.

Samsung's LED DLP's (which weren't around when you bought your TV) pretty much dispense with those problems.
