All in all I think blu-ray is doing quite well. Sure, DVD is still selling & releasing more but that's because the install base is enormous compared to the still young blu-ray format.
Also, when DVD came out, it's was a digital medium competing against a tape-based (VHS) medium. Now, we have two digital media competing so I guess it'll take blu-ray a bit longer to overtake DVD than it took DVD to overtake VHS. Let's wait until SD broadcasts are over with and everyone will HAVE to switch to a HD-TV ... that, coupled with lowered prices on BR-players will help BR find it's market spot. |

How old is BD? 2 years plus a few months since it debuted in the US? According to USA Today, the 1000th DVD title was released in May of '98, just over a year after DVD hit the streets, and it took less than three years to reach 5000 titles. BD does have a lot of catching up to do. |

I know. The majority of the Blu-Ray titles I've bought I still haven't actually seen, Between work, trying to find a new job and other stuff, I only seem to watch DVD's on the weekend. And even then, it's usually a season of a tv show on DVD from the library. It's just a mountain of stuff that never goes away.

People wont HAVE to switch to HD-TV.. A simple box is all they need. Br will need really low prices to find its market spot. The way the economy is, is not good for BR. Sad but true. I just hope they release quailty moives. Talking PQ. I would rather have quailty then qty.. |

The biggest hinderance (in my opinion) to widespread Blu adoption is the requirement for an HDTV. Until prices for HDTV comes down so that your average Wal-marter is going to be able to buy one, Blu will never be the dominant format. Simply too many people (obviously folks not on this site...hell, probably folks without computers/internet) that can't afford an HDTV, but have the $30 DVD player from the gas station.

Cut that 71K number by at least a third. That accounts for worthless crap, and other $5 bargain bin trash no one wants at full retail price. I have always believed most movies are short term money making machines which become completely forgotten in a few years time.

Most of those DVDs are crap quality straight to DVD movies or re-releases of movies several times.
There are also a lot of TV shows from the 80's that will never end up on Blu-ray because they are SD quality with SD quality effects. Examples would included Seaquest DSV (used video toaster and lightwave 3D), Babylon five (used lightwave 3D). Last edited by aristotles; 09-04-2008 at 03:51 PM. |
