Default Subwoofer Recommendations

I know it’s bad and s/b considered sacrilege, but I don’t have a subwoofer as of yet.

It’s not as bad as it seems b/c my HDTV and Blu-Ray player are in my living room and my surround sound is downstairs in my basement which is going to be converted into a home theater hopefully this winter.

I currently own the POINT 5 MK II System from Athena. It comes with 4 satellites and 1 center channel. I don’t have any problem buying a different name brand sub. I have a Sony receiver buy want to swap that out in the future.

Has anyone been completely blown away (get it??) by their sub and have nothing but good things to say about it??

I’ve been exposed to JBL, Sony, Yamaha, and Klipsch. Any recommendations/help would be appreciated.

My subwoofer has been extremely impressive (too impressive actually) But you're going to want something to compliment your satellite setup.... What impresses me, or someone else, may not be beneficial to you.

I'd look at 10" subs if I were you....

Def Tech, Velodyne, and Martin Logan to name a few.....

My bad, figured I forgot something.

Probably not to much above $350, maybe $400. Got 2 little ones @ home, can't spend money the way I used to.

At that range I'd stay away from big-name big-store brands - well, you don't want to overpower your little satellites like Beta said - check out Elemental Designs' offerings in this page, they make solid subwoofers:

http://www.edesignaudio.com/index.php?cPath=2_41

They might be a bit strong for you, but if you eventually upgrade your system, they're solid bets. The A2-300 comes highly recommended in this forum! And it would be kid proof, these things are solidly-built.

HSU's VTF-1 listed here is also solid:
http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-1.html

Remember that as these are internet brands, you may find it nigh impossible to give them a listen and see what works best for you - but they will both be improvements in your system. But both of these brands are highly recommended and provide much more, ah, what's the term? Bang for your buck - than any other offerings from Klipsch, Polk, JBL, etc.

I've been completely blown away by the sub I plan on buying (listened to it bazillions of times this summer - dropping by to buy it today or tomorrow, actually! ) - the Martin Logan Dynamo - but for $600 it is a bit of a stretch for you, but a very musical, well-tuned subwoofer than does more than just deliver booms and bangs out of your LFEs.

As JJ mentioned, the eD A2-300 would be the best choice in my opinion in that price range.

I'm an audio novice (learning though) and I have just bought and am very happy with the Polk PSW111. It is very smooth; it's never too much that you hear it above anything else, but yet it's always there smoothly delivering the base. The sound is surprising considering that it's on the smaller side compared to the eD A2-300.

Also, it is on sale at Amazon for $229 (retails for $349).

I got this one in that price range:

http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ures/549480063

It was $300 at Amazon back in March, you'd have to shop around a little to find that price again. 400w rms, peaks at 800w. It's a lot of power at the price, has a very warm sound, but also a lot of range. It drives a lot of air and gives a very realistic "feel" to low-end sound, plus it has some cool features. I've been very happy with it.

For that price range i have to recommend the ed A2-300, a friend of mine got it recently and it's an amazing sub period. I would definitely recommend it, when i do my next speaker upgrade it will be my subwoofer of choice.

I've got a http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm And personally I think it's the best 10" sub on the market. I can back that up with over six months of reviewing every single 10" available and listening to countless subs, reading reviews and talking to owners of different subs. The PB10-NSD absolutely rocks my apartment. So much in fact that a few months ago my neighbor asked my wife if we felt tremors because it felt like there was an earthquake after I watched Cloverfield on blu-ray one saturday. I'm completely impressed with SVS subs from their awesome customer service to the fast shipping (two days) to the perfect build quality . I'm sold on SVS and probably will always be. Next when I finally buy a house I'll be getting http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-pb13ultra.cfm

For that price range, I would suggest checking out Outlaw Audio's LFM1 Compact Sub. It was designed by Dr. Hsu, and it has received great reviews. It's a 10" downward firing design with 225 watts RMS / 1000 watts peak, with low range extension fairly rated at 25 Hz (-2 dB). Outlaw only sells direct, so they cut out a lot on distribution costs. It's available for just $399, and they offer a 30-day in house audition period.

Here it is:
