Angry Problem with GTA4

I just got the game and it won't work, can't even install it.
Everytime I insert the BD in the PS3 I get a black screen with some dashes all over the screen in vertical lines. I hear the music but nothing else.
So today I went to Blockbuster and rented the game and the same thing happens. Anyone has any idea of what could be the problem?

Btw, I have the MSG4 80gb bundle.

this may sound odd, but try disconnecting from PSN first then give it a try

though I would recommend going this route, here are some methods that may fix the problem for you, but most likely will not help:

1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information.

2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete.

3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this.

I didn't have the dashes or vertical lines that you described, but my GTA IV would die during the initial cut scenes of the game. Nothing, including the so-called 12-step program, disconnecting from the network, etc. would allow the game to work. The picture would freeze, even though the sound would continue uninterrupted.

Evidently, there is a known incompatibility between GTA IV and some batches of PS3, particularly some of the original 60GB units. I called Sony about it, and they said the only solution, for me, was for them to replace my PS3, which they did for no charge - even though the system is out of warranty. I had one of the first batches of 60GB PS3s, purchased on release day in Nov 2006. Aside from GTA IV, my system never had a hiccup playing any other game.

According to the Sony customer rep I spoke to, there are two classes of issues. One is the problem I experienced and that affects even single-player operation. The second is an issue that affects network operation (multi-player). The later issue is supposed to be addressed eventually with a new software update or patch.

Thanks all for the replies, I'm gonna try to see what I can do.

To Valore, the game is not even installed yet but I'll try number 3.

Alright,
Valore was right. If I disable network access, the game starts. If I turn it back on, it doesn't launch.
So does that mean I can't play the game online?
I have yet to install the game so would it work online once it's installed?
Should I get a replacement PS3?

With the new firmware you can go back to the PS3 menu while in the game. I would recommend getting completely into the game, then pressing the PS button to access the PS3's menu and connecting to PSN, then going back into the game. The multi-player is all kinds of fun, so it would be a shame if this doesn't work for you.
