Default When 1080p just doesn't cut it

Meridian has raised the bar for elite video playback with their new 810 Reference Video Playback System. This projection system uses a JVC light engine and 4K D-ILA panels to deliver a staggering 10-mega-pixel HD image in the home.

The projector features 5 QDEO video processing chips for its de-interlacing and scaling and includes an anamorphic lens on a powered slide. The projector is painstakingly calibrated at the factory before shipment and can be outfitted with several different lens options. The projector has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and outputs a blinding 3500 lumens.

The price tag is a very reasonable $185,000 and the projector is already shipping to local Best Buy and Wal-Mart outlets near you. Honestly, with video this good, you’ll want it in every room! (Okay, they may be harder to find than that)

http://blog.hometheatermag.com/cedia...doesnt_cut_it/

JVC gave a stunning demonstration of its new (and currently shipping) DLA-SH4K projector. No, that's not it in the photo (more on that in a minute) but the DLA-SH4K is claimed to be the world's smallest 4K digital projector (resolution 4096x2400). No price was given, but it's definitely in the "If you have to ask" territory—and from the looks of the images shown, well worth it. With native 4K material, this is the best-looking video image I've ever seen—and this on screen large enough for a small commercial theater.

The big news for the rest of us, however, is the introduction of two new JVC projector models, the DLA-HD350 and the DLA-HD750, which are nearly identical physically (shown) and noticeably narrower than the current JVC models. (There are also two functionally identical models from the JVC Pro division, the RS-10 and the RS-20). The new designs are said to offer higher brightness than any of the current JVC home theater models, but also offer a multi-step (fixed) aperture to dial in the appropriate brightness for any screen.

Both models offer full while balance controls—both high and low (a notable shortcoming of the current designs) and the DLA-HDHD750 (and the RS-20) have a full color management system. The DLA-HD750 (and the RS-10) are also THX certified. Both models also have fully powered lenses (zoom, focus, and shift) and a powered lens cover to protect the lens when not in use. Pricing should be just under $7000 for the DLA-HD750 and under $6000 for the DLA-HD350 (with similar prices on the pro models).

Ready For Another Format War?
Entertainment Experience is a new startup that is looking to start a new format war. The service is said to bring a more premium movie experience than the Blu-ray format for people using larger screen sizes. Studio support wasn’t specified but they claim to be in negotiations for 4,500 titles at launch in January.

The movies will feature a higher average bitrate than Blu-ray content hovering around 45mbps plus a larger color gamut just outside of HD’s REC 709. Titles will run about $39.95 each and will require the use of their player, which stores the movies onto a hard drive for playback. The movies can be either downloaded or delivered for loading via a Blu-ray 50GB disc. The player is expected to run for around $6,000.

The specifications don’t seem too much different than the Blu-ray format other than color gamut and average bitrate. How much of that will translate to improved picture performance remains to be seen. The films are still 8-bit and the audio quality wasn’t clear though I heard uncompressed PCM mentioned, but only from an analog output.

The demonstration didn’t prove to be very compelling. The exhibitor used a 3-chip DLP system to show some Kodak footage along with a trailer for Chronicles of Narnia. Despite the high bitrates compression artifacts were quite noticeable including macroblocking and severe banding. Hopefully the titles in the pipe will be more impressive.

I'm sure studios are looking forward to another CE war not to mention the other CEs.

I wonder if the red Nazis are all for this considering they needed -$99.00 players by Christmas 07 to have hope.

If anyone buys that equipment, they will most likely be watching movies by themselves because they will be saying, "I'm rich *****!"

lmao blu-ray is already too expensive for most people, they expect people to pay those prices?

pretty bold statement to say it's better than blu-ray when the presentation leaves a doubtful mind in the report.

Seems like a lot of smoke screen, and wishfull thinking. Really doubt that you will ever see anything tangible regarding this.

Couple of things.....

People saying "it's too expensive" are using the same argument as the HD DVD supporters..... I do agree that it won't see mass consumer adoption due to price though.

Bestbuy will actually have these at retail?????? I DOUBT THAT..... I don't think an $8 hourly employee is going to have keys to a plexi-glass case holding a $185,000 piece of electronics ( I could be wrong though) If so, I bet more end up "missing" than selling..... I knew people who worked there.... I've seen people with free laptops etc.... I know it happens.

We know there isn't a big market for this... people can only see "so well" and a $5,000 1080p projector isn't the same as a $50,000 one.... (I think with what's at the market now.... the big "jump" in projectors comes as the $30,000 price point) Brain Sturgeon may have more knowledge on this point, because I think he's in the market for a high-end unit right now... I can't say that I've personally shopped around my options at those price points (My kid's going to the University of Michigan, and it's out of state, so we gotta start saving now )

This is like having audiophiles having the best sound setup but only playing audiophile recording while ignoring ALL other recordings and Multichannel recordings. In other words, not a true music lover - just a lover of bragging hardware.

The same situation exists here. While this system can be used to play BD, the owners probably won't because they are waiting for their custom discs. Again, what's the point? These discs won't have indie films, foreign films or even TV shows.

One report I read said that the movies come in two DVDs to be copied to the HDD using Microsoft DRM system. Urgh. That's enough for me to say, "Nay!"

Your right alot of people think that 20 dollor DVD's are to expensive who in their right mind (even if they are movie junkies) would buy a 6,000 dollor player. Besides you probaly wouldn't be able to tell the diffrence unless your only a foot aaway from the screen. People are just getting used to the idea of blu ray. We are not ready for another format when Blu Ray is just starting to really take off.
