Default WATCHMEN: Director's Cut or Ultimate Cut?

Seeing that there's a big price drop on the standard Director's Cut release, (now down to $13.99), I'm wondering if the Ultimate Cut is worth getting or is the Director's Cut adequate?

I have the Director's Cut on DVD, and it's an alright film, not that big of a fan of the story, but still an interesting film. I just hate shill out $40 for just some added animated scenes and such. Does it make that much difference to the overall viewing experience? And what's on all the other discs in the Ultimate set that might make it worthwhile?

If you have a ps3 and like games you can get the Watchmen game witch also has the DC Blu-Ray in it for $20. I know the game is not great but its fun for $6 more considering both parts go for $15 each on PSN.

So what you all are saying is that the added Tales of the Black Freighter or whatever it's called doesn't really add much or even detracts from the main film enough to warrant not spending the extra ~$25 for the Ultimate Cut now?

I have the Ultimate Cut because its the only version that I have ever bought. I really like this version but can see where people would have a problem double dipping.

If you really want Black Freighter just buy that Blu separate because to me it being woven in makes the movie to darn long and does not add much.

I agree, I thought it was pretty superfluous in the graphic novel, as well. Stick with the Director's Cut, you won't be missing anything.

You know, the tales from the black freighter is available separately. So you don't have to buy the full director's cut unless you want to see it mixed in with the film. It includes the talk show about 'under the hood' as well.

*** oops, too slow.

Since you're not a big fan of the Director's Cut to begin with, I don't see you gaining any benefit from seeing a longer version of the movie, regardless. The Black Freighter footage, while well edited into the DC, doesn't make it significantly better; it's just cool to have if you're a fan of the original graphic novel. And while I like it, imo I don't think the added footage makes it a better film. If anything, it probably makes it more confusing for non-fans of the novel.

I have the Ultimate Cut of Watchmen and I enjoy it thoroughly, but I am a huge fan of the graphic novel as well. The Ultimate Cut is the film version that is closest to the graphic novel, but I can understand why some people would not want that to necessarily be the case.

Tales of the Black Freighter does not really add anything to the story of Watchmen; it is there to serve as a thematic parallel to the characters in the Watchmen universe, mainly Veidt. Therefore, if you are at all a fan of the film, it definitely works fine without it as well.

I was a little worried about how jarring the intercut animation sequences might be in the Ultimate Cut, but thankfully they are typically paired with a scene of Bernard reading the comic at the other Bernard's news stand, either before or after. So I don't really think it's any more jarring than how it was presented in the graphic novel.

The Ultimate Cut is the only version of Watchmen I own. Not that it can't be enjoyed by all audiences, but I definitely think it is more tailored for those who have already read the graphic novel. The Director's Cut is a very solid option and that is a good price, too.

One more thing to mention: Under the Hood is a really sweet Special Feature on the Ultimate Cut. It is also available on the Tales of the Black Freighter BD as well, if you were to go that route.

I agree w/ most of the comments on here. I, like a couple of you, have The Ultimate cut, and its the only version I own. I enjoyed the graphic novel and I feel (not unlike the EEs of LotR), the UC is a better presentation. It also comes w/ the motion graphic novel, which is a pretty cool extra (not tossing mt gn away, but cool nonetheless). That said, if you weren't a big fan of the DC, I'd probably pass altogether (unless padding your blu collection is a goal of yours).

I'm a great fan of the GN. So the UC is the only version for me. It's long yes, but it doesn't feel THAT long to me. The movie feels now complete.

Where I'm no huge fan of Watchmen the graphic novel I did borrow a copy from a friend before seeing at the cinema.

I opted for the Ultimate Edition and watched it last w/end, I will say I still enjoyed the film but with no prior knowledge of the graphic novel you might wonder what the inclusion of the Black Freighter is all about, which I understood having read it but if you haven't, stick with the Theatrical or the DC I say.

The Ultimate set is a nice package though and worked out no more £23.00 for me and there's plenty of special features, yet to watch the Under The Hood docu though.

Yep definitely the DC. Not to mention the blu ray is visually stunning and it has the cool special feature maximum movie mode. Wich the UC does not have

Tales of the black freighter makes some cool parallels during the movie, but really does not add much to the overall story. If you're not a really HUGE Watchmen fan, I would say stick with the DC as it is DEFINITELY great by itself
